Pakenham Cup Top Tip – Mankayan
The Listed Pakenham Cup (2500m) is the feature race of the day, and we are hoping the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Mankayan can make it consecutive Cup victories. Having outstayed Blanford Lad in the Cranbourne Cup, he did his best work late to get up in the shadows of the winning post. It was his first win on Australian soil, and with that type of confidence behind him, we expect he will go on with the job at Pakenham. Prior to that win, he had five straight minor placings to his name this campaign, including a second behind Great House in the Hotham Handicap. If he brings the type of performance he produced in the Cranbourne Cup and the Hotham, then Mankayan will be a big chance at a nice price.
Pakenham Best Bet – Maybe The Best
The Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Maybe The Best has not finished worse than second in six career starts, and despite only winning twice in that stretch, she looks a clear best bet on Saturday. The rising four-year-old mare regains the services of Jye McNeil, who was on board for the all-the-way win at Bendigo on October 27, so that is good news for a horse that looks to be a genuine frontrunner. Last time out, at Cranbourne on a Heavy 10, she settled outside the leader and found one better in the shadows of the winning post. Both of her career wins have come on firmer decks, which is what she gets here, and from barrier two, McNeil should have no issue in finding the lead and dictating terms over the 1400m trip.
Next Best Bet – Marine One
Marine One from the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace yard steps out of the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes and back into a BM70 where he looks very hard to beat. The son of Capitalist finished 11th in the Coolmore, beaten convincingly by Home Affairs, but considering he was only a length off the likes of Shaquero, Extreme Warrior and Ingratiating, he looks the one to beat here. The three-year-old colt will get the run of the race from barrier three, and considering he goes around with 57kg following Josh Richards’ claim, his class alone has him right in this. His win two starts back at Moonee Valley on October 22 oozed class, so the $4.20 looks a steal if he is anywhere near his best.
Best Value at Pakenham – Turbeau
Having smashed his rivals in the Tatura Cup, the David Brideoake-trained Turbeau comes to Pakenham in career-best form having won three of his past four starts. He is a get-back-and-run-on type who has shown an excellent turn of foot in weaker company, but this five-year-old son of Brazen Beau looks ready for the step up in grade. With good form behind subsequent Stakes winner Rainbiel earlier in this campaign, he deserves a crack at metropolitan level. With a genuine tempo expected, the race should be run to Turbeau’s liking, and with a nice turn of foot, he should be fighting out the finish.
