Pakenham is scheduled to host an eight-race card on Thursday night, and HorseBetting’s Victorian form expert presents his best bets and free quaddie selections for the meeting. The track is rated a Soft 5, the rail is out 8m for the entire circuit, and racing is set to commence at 5:45pm AEDT.
Pakenham Best Bet – Sig Positano
Our best of the night comes up in the fourth race when the formidable duo of Patrick Payne and Billy Egan combines with five-year-old gelding Sig Positano. The son of Canford Cliffs clearly is a Pakenham specialist, having won twice from three attempts here, although he could only manage manage second place when resuming at the track on November 11. Having hit the line with vigorous intent on that day, he simply had too much to do in the home straight and was defeated by the narrowest of margins. That was over 1200m, and as he steps up to the 1400m in a small field of six, he should not be too far from the speed throughout. With a genuine tempo expected, the race should be set up perfectly for Sig Positano to have the last look at them and finish right over the top.
Next Best Bet at Pakenham – Ice Ice Baby
The Wendy Kelly-trained Ice Ice Baby has strung together consecutive victories for the first time in his career, and we expect him to make it three in a row on Thursday. The four-year-old son of Reward For Effort fought on strongly over the final 100m to claim victory at the track and distance on November 11 in a similar race to this. From barrier three, look for Brian Park to be positive in his ride and take up the lead. Despite going up 2kg in the weights, Ice Ice Baby should be too good for this lot.
Best Value Bet at Pakenham – Sister Vianney
If the market is anything to go by, then the opening event is a race in two with equal $2.60 favourites Our Heidi and Cherrypick set to duke it out. However, the Greg Eurell-trained Sister Vianney can spoil the party and finish better than her market price suggests. On the back of a four-month spell, we expect the three-year-old Ilovethiscity filly to take a sit off the speed and take advantage of some vulnerable leaders late on. This one has solid form behind the smart Elusive Express last campaign, and if she is screwed down for this first-up assignment, then we can see her causing a minor upset.
