Pakenham racecourse is scheduled to host its weekly eight-race card on Thursday night and Horsebetting’s Victorian tipster is confident in finding a winner or three. The meeting is set to be run a track rated a Good 4, with the rail out 3m each horse should get their chance on the night with the track playing fairly over recent weeks.
Racing is set to commence at 5:45pm AEDT.
Pakenham Best Bet – Captain Corelli
The Mick Price & Michael Kent Jr-trained Captain Corelli returned from a 15-month spell at The Valley on February 4 when finishing third beaten just over a length when gaining not much luck in the home straight. He will naturally strip fitter here for this second-up run and considering he has a win to his name when second-up we’re happy to side with him here. Having not been beaten far in a Caulfield Guineas in his three-year-old campaign, this four-year-old Tavistock gelding clearly has plenty of ability and will be looking to bring up a confidence-building win on Thursday. From barrier 12, Patrick Moloney will need a touch of luck in gaining cover close to the speed, but if he can have Captain Corelli settled in the one-one than he should prove too good for this BM64 affair.
Next Best Bet at Pakenham – Madame Du Gast
We were giving Madame Du Gast an outside chance in the Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes at Caulfield on February 12 but could do no better than a four-length defeat when finishing eighth behind Argentia. Prior to that run, she was an impressive winner down the Flemington straight and managed to beat Elite Icon who has subsequently ran brilliantly at The Valley. The three-year-old De Gaulle filly is a get back and run on type and whilst needing the race to be run to suit her style, she should be too sharp over 1200m for this lot. This is a considerable drop in grade back to Class 1 level and if she is anywhere near her best, then Madam Du Gast looks one of the best bets on the card.
Best Value Bet at Pakenham – Via Capo
The Grahame Begg-trained Via Capo will be out to break a winning drought dating back almost 12 months when stepping out over 1400m. The five-year-old Stress Boss gelding wasn’t beaten far at Sandown on February 2, despite needing to travel three wide with no cover throughout. Having chased home Pal D’oro at Caulfield two starts back when finishing second, he brings some decent form lines into this BM64 event. From barrier two, Jordan Childs should look to have the bay gelding settled in the first half of the field where he can track the speed into the race. His turn of foot is good enough to take out a race like this and we expect Via Capo to be too strong late in the second leg of the quaddie.
