An eight-race program awaits punters at Pakenham on Thursday night with the first race set to get underway at 5:15pm AEST. The first four races are maidens, with the last four being Benchmark 64 encounters on a card that looks tough for punters to dissect. There will be plenty of value around, and we have provided three tips along with some quaddie numbers.
BEST BET: HELJAMI
Sheridan Clarke gets the 2kg claim on Heljami, who has a good barrier (3) to help his chances. He hasn’t raced in a while, but his third at Cranbourne on April 1 was solid, and with a winning jumpout since then, we think he is ready. He is a winner of five from 19 starts so he knows how to win and did race well in 2021. He gets around Pakenham okay and ran a decent third here 12 months ago over the 1600m when beaten less than a length, and he did win here before that on May 13. So, more than anything, we are banking on that he likes Pakenham and will produce his best on Thursday. He isn’t blessed with great speed out of the barriers, so we expect him to settle midfield in the run from the good draw.

NEXT BEST: PREEMPTORY
From barrier two, this Ciaron Maher & David Eustace gelding should get a good run second up from a spell. His form isn’t flash, but his first-up run at Donald wasn’t too bad when making up good ground late for fourth. We will probably want each-way odds, but the 1400m will suit and we can see him running on well again here. Stravain and Vahash are the toughest to beat. Bluestone Larie is just a battler but has four wins to his name, so he must be respected.

Race 7 – #5 Preemptory (2)
3yo Gelding | T: Ciaron Maher & David Eustace | J: Beau Mertens (58.5kg)

VALUE BET: BODRUM
Bodrum has been racing around the country circuit, but we liked his effort at Ballarat last start when he made up good ground finishing second over the 2100m at $16. While the bookmakers won’t be offering quite those odds here, we are hoping the five-year-old gelding can produce a sustaining run from the 500m mark. His third at Horsham three starts back was similar to his Ballarat run, as he was about eighth at the 600m mark and ran home very nicely to finish third. He has fitness on his side and the 2200m distance won’t cause any issues for him. Hardest to beat is Whirly Jig, who has placed in each of her last two starts.
