For the second time in the space of 24 hours, an eight-race program is scheduled for Pakenham Racecourse on Friday evening. Perfect conditions are forecast throughout Melbourne’s south-east in the lead-up to the meeting, so we expect to start on a Good 4 after irrigation goes on the track on Friday morning to ensure we are not on too firm a deck. The rail will come out 8m from the 1000m-400m, while it will remain in the 5m position the remainder for the meeting commencing at 5:45pm AEDT.
Best Bet at Pakenham: Dreamstone
Having produced a strong jump out win at Cranbourne leading into this first-up run, the Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr-trained Dreamstone looks a clear best bet on a tricky night at Pakenham. The three-year-old filly had one race day start back in September when running somewhat of a luckless fifth over 1400m. She was ridden up on speed at her jump out and offered a nice kick when pressured in the home straight to suggest she was ready to win wherever she went. From barrier six, we’re hoping Blaike McDougall can hold a spot in the one-one throughout and when asked for an effort, Dreamstone can offer that turn of foot she produced at Cranbourne.

Next Best at Pakenham: Edith
The Peter Moody-trained Edith is a mare on the way up and we anticipate she will build on her last start win at Sandown over 1800m on February 15. Luke Nolen snagged her back to the rear of the field on that day before having her unleash down the centre of the track to go on and score an impressive victory. The step up to the 2000m third-up from a spell looks ideal and considering she draws similarly and should gain a similar run in transit, it is hard to find any excuse for Edith. Her turn of foot is strong for a progressive stayer and under the care of Peter Moody, we know she will be strong late on over the trip and with a bit of luck prove too hard to hold out.

Best Value at Pakenham: Startide
One that we are willing to give a push to at a big price is the Phillip Stokes-trained Startide who returns from a four-month spell in what looks to be a winnable BM64 for fillies and mares. The three-year-old filly brings some nice form lines to this 1000m scamper, especially when finishing second behind subsequent Quezette Stakes winner Bound For Home when on debut. Her career peaks have clearly come when fresh and her three-length win on the Pakenham Synthetic showed that during the spring last year. She will need to be up on speed from the tricky draw and if Ben Allen can have her outside the leader, we expect her natural want for further will have her perfectly situated in a race like this. With a bit of luck, she can kick clear from her rivals in the home straight and salute at a nice price with online bookmakers.
