We head to Newcastle for a mammoth 10-race program headlined by The Hunter with $1 million in prizemoney on offer. We should have picture perfect conditions on race-day with the track rated a Good 4 and nothing but clear skies on the radar heading into Saturday. The rail sits in the True position the entire circuit, so we should have an even playing field here as the first race gets underway at 12:20pm AEDT
NJC Spring Stakes: Saveadateforme
We’ve landed with the favourite on top in this three-year-old Group 3 feature Saveadateforme. This Savabeel colt has been in outstanding form in his opening preparation winning two of his three starts, with both his wins coming by significant margins. You only need to look at his last start demolition job at Goulburn on October 30 winning by a comfortable 4-length margin to see just how much talent and upside this John O’Shea galloper has moving forward. There’s no doubt this looks his toughest task so far in his career but looks ready to take on the challenge on Saturday afternoon. Tommy Berry takes the reins from what looks a tricky gate in barrier-10, however Saveadateforme will be getting back from the start regardless, so we aren’t concerned about the barrier, we just need some cover mid-race and if we get that, Saveadateforme should get his chance to grab a late spring feature.

Best Bet at Newcastle: King Frankel
Our best of the day comes in the staying contest of the afternoon in race four over the 2300m, the Beaumont Handicap. King Frankel has been terrific since arriving in Australia for the Mark Newnham yard and we think he can step up in grade to snag this $300,000 feature. With just 50.5kg on his back after the Tyler Schiller claim, King Frankel gets in on the minimum and should look to lead from the outset as he did last start winning at Warwick Farm on October 19 by 0.3 lengths. He was strong to the line that day and only looks to relish the step up in trip as well heading into this fourth-up, King Frankel should be fit and with very little tempo in this race on paper, they should be able to dictate terms to his opposition before kicking clear off the bend to score.

Next Best at Newcastle: Waihaha Falls
Waihaha Falls looks to have resumed in amazing order and looks a keen bet for us in the penultimate race on the card at Newcastle. His first-up effort at Randwick on October 15 in the Sydney Stakes was enormous going down by 1.1 lengths behind Rocketing By. He was way too far back that day before storming home between runners and with any luck would’ve been going on to win eased down. It was a horror watch if you were on, but we should get a perfect run here from a much better barrier and despite the 61.5kg after the Recce Jones’ claim, Waihaha Falls just looks like he’s got more upside than most of his opposition here. Keep in mind he is dual accepted to run in The Hunter but provided he doesn’t get a run as fourth emergency get on here to ensure you get a price, because he’ll be a firm favourite come start time if he ends up in this BM88 contest.

Best Value at Newcastle: Bonny Ezra
Bonny Ezra is our value play of the afternoon and comes in race six over the 1850m. He’s second up this preparation after a solid effort first-up behind Diamil at Randwick on October 22 beaten by 3.8 lengths. It was an unsuitable trip over the mile and this Chris Waller-trained gelding always seems to improve as he gets over further and has an impressive second-up record of five starts for two wins and another minor placing. We get another massive bonus here with gun hoop James McDonald getting aboard here, and while we may be paying the ‘J-Mac’ tax at the $7 quote with the top online bookies, he still looks a cracking price to us and we’re happy to be with him as the value bet of the afternoon.
