HorseBetting’s New South Wales racing analyst has previewed the seven-race provincial meeting at Newcastle on Wednesday and brings you his best bets and quaddie numbers for the afternoon. The track is rated a Good 4 and the rail is out 6m for the entire course. Racing will get underway at 2:20pm AEDT with the running of a 2&3YO Maiden Plate over 900m.
Newcastle Best Bet – Tycoon Hallie
Brad Widdup’s classy four-year-old Tycoon Hallie looks ridiculously hard to beat in the last race of the day in a Benchmark 64 over 1500m. The daughter of Written Tycoon was thrown in the deep end early in her career when contesting the Group 3 Adrian Knox at Randwick, where she was eased down to run a long last, but she had issues that day and so can easily be forgiven. The four-year-old beat Different Strokes at Hawkesbury on August 19 before running three straight minor placings. Having drawn wide in barrier 10, jockey Mitchell Bell will look to get her to the crown of the track, where she will be able to wind up and hit the line strongly. A repeat of her last-start second will see her in the winner’s stall.
Next Best at Newcastle – Big Short
The last time we saw Big Short at the races, he was battling away to run third at Goulburn in a 1600m Maiden Plate, where he finished 1.4 lengths behind Achira and one-tenth of a length behind subsequent Group 1 VRC Oaks winner Willowy. The Chris Waller-trained son of Capitalist was given an easy time at the trials on January 4 over an unfavourable 900m journey, but it should have him ticking over nicely for this first-up assignment over 1400m. Big Short has drawn a touch awkwardly in barrier 11, but he will come in to gate 10 after final scratchings, which can allow Rory Hutchings to go forward and put him into the race early. He no doubt has the class, it’s just whether or not he needs the run on Wednesday.
Newcastle Value Bet – Danish Prince
Danish Prince lines up in the penultimate race on Wednesday over 1500m, where he looks quite hard to beat. The son of Dane Shadow has won two of his 13 starts, while he has placed on a further three occasions. This three-year-old gelding finished 3.4 lengths behind Socialist on December 3, with that horse franking the form by running third in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas last Saturday. Danish Prince was well supported at Nowra last time out over 1400m on a Heavy 8, and despite leading throughout, he was grabbed in the shadows of the post. Up to 1500m and on to a dry track, he can roll along in front under Tim Clark with 55kg and prove hard to run down.
