NSW racing heads to the Hunter on Tuesday afternoon, with Newcastle Racecourse set to host a strong seven-race program. The rail sits out +10m the entire circuit for the meeting, and although there are some signs of showers in the region, we’re expecting the surface to sit somewhere in the Good range for race day. The opening event is set to kick things off at 1:20pm AEST.
Best Bet at Newcastle: Diabelli
Diabelli has been racing in outstanding form this preparation and looks very close to securing a second-career win. The son of Fastnet Rock broke his maiden status first-up courtesy of an expert steer by Christian Reith at Newcastle over 1300m, shutting the door on subsequent winner Andronicus to score a dominant one-length victory. Since then, the three-year-old stormed home at Kembla Grange on August 12, and getting to the 1850m for the first time should suit ideally. Diabelli should trail the leaders back throughout from gate two and, when asked for an effort, look like the winner at some stage.

Next Best at Newcastle: Vomo Island
It’s been a frustrating three starts to date for Vomo Island, finding the minor money on all three occasions. His form jumps off the page, however, with his latest effort being a 1.5-length defeat at Randwick behind Tannhauser on May 27, who then went on to finish third in the Group 1 JJ Atkins. The Peter and Paul Snowden camp has since sent the colt for a short 94-day spell, and with a terrific tick-over trial between runs, he looks ready to fire first-up. Joshua Parr only has one ride booked heading into Tuesday, and we think it’s a winning one aboard Vomo Island.

Best Value at Newcastle: Study
The support continues to grow with online bookmakers as Study makes her race-day debut, and it’s easy to see why. The James Cummings-trained filly has firmed from $11 into $5 and comes on the back of two impressive jump-outs, with the latter being a winning effort at Kembla Grange on August 9. She weaved a passage under Zac Lloyd, and from barrier nine on Tuesday, we expect the daughter of Sidestep to do something similar. Study may not be totally wound up for this first-up assignment; however, at the price, we’re willing to find out.
