Newcastle races preview

What Newcastle Races
Where Newcastle Racecourse – 100 Darling St, Broadmeadow NSW 2292
When Tuesday, February 18, 2025
First Race 2:25pm AEDT

Newcastle Racecourse is the destination for provincial racing on Tuesday afternoon, with a six-part program awaiting locals.

The rail moves out +11m the entire circuit for the meeting, and with no significant rainfall predicted in the lead-up, punters can happily do the form for a genuine Good 4 surface.

The opening event is scheduled to get underway at 2:25pm AEDT.

Best Bet at Newcastle: City Gold Banner

City Gold Banner endured a torrid run three-wide without cover at Kembla Grange on January 29, fading out badly in the concluding stages. Punters can be forgiving of that performance and reference his debut victory at Warwick Farm on January 8, where the son of Starspangledbanner circled the small field of five to claim an impressive maiden victory. Expect a positive steer by Keagan Latham from the awkward draw (9), and provided he can recapture his best, the appears to be a fair price to find out.

Best Bet

Race 5 – City Gold Banner Silks#1 City Gold Banner (9)

3yo Colt | T: Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou | J: Keagan Latham (60.5kg)

Next Best at Newcastle: Botanica

Botanica is on the short back-up after returning at Canterbury on February 14 and appeared to need the run first-up. The son of Written Tycoon was only getting warm late, and punters can be willing to spectate that effort as a glorified barrier trial heading into this second-up assignment. Zac Lloyd elects to stick aboard the lightly raced five-year-old, and if the breaks fall his way from stall 12, Botanica should have the class to despatch this lot.

Next Best

Race 3 – Botanica Silks#2 Botanica (12)

5yo Gelding | T: Michael, John & Wayne Hawkes | J: Zac Lloyd (61.5kg)

Best Value at Newcastle: Tokyo Queen

Tokyo Queen represents terrific value with horse racing bookmakers as she debuts for the Fabio Martino barn. The daughter of Staphanos is yet to fully extend at the barrier trials, suggesting the unraced three-year-old had plenty left to give at the end of her most recent piece of work at Warwick Farm on January 30. She maps to get a lovely run in transit from barrier five, and with this maiden contest full of live chances, Tokyo Queen has the most appeal at the each-way price.

Best Value

Race 2 – Tokyo Queen Silks#10 Tokyo Queen (5)

3yo Filly | T: Fabio Martino | J: Louis Beuzelin (56.5kg)
