We kick-off the week of racing on Monday afternoon with a competitive seven-race program coming out of Newcastle Racecourse. The rail is in the true position the entire circuit and while it’s currently listed in the Soft range; we expect a delouse of rain over the weekend to put the track into something closer to a heavy deck. So with all that being said, we’ll be looking for gallopers accustom to wet conditions for Monday afternoon. The first race is set to get underway at 1:50pm AEDT.
Best Bet at Newcastle – King’s Duty
We thought it was hard to go past King’s Duty in the third race of the program as the best bet and looks to debut a winner on Monday. This three-year-old gelding has stepped out for three barrier trials prior to this debut effort and has improved on every jump out. Mikayla Weir has ridden this son of Exosphere in every gallop and has shown versatility in all of them as well. Drawn barrier nine on Monday, we should see Weir take all luck out of the equation and ping the lids to lead throughout the 1150m contest and find again late turning for home. The only query we have will be the heavy conditions likely for Monday; however, his trials on the soft surface have been positive, so we’re willing to take the risk King’s Duty can handle the conditions.

Next Best at Newcastle – Osman
Osman looks ready to win here second-up after a terrific return at Gosford on January 13. He was first-up behind promising galloper, King Of Naples, after a 17-week spell and hit the line strongly from well back in the field from an awkward gate. He kicked off his campaign over the 1200m and immediately looks to the 1350m here, which looks much more suitable for a horse of his get-back run-on pattern. His form on wetter decks looks to stack up well here and with senior jockey Aaron Bullock electing to stick on this gelding by American Pharoah, he should be right in the finish here. He’s got a great strike rate, with nine starts for three wins, with two of those on the heavier side of a soft track. He’ll be getting back again from barrier six; however, we think he can chase them down here.

Next Best Again at Newcastle – Daytona Gal
Daytona Gal debuted in stylish fashion on January 14 at Kembla Grange and should be finding best here in her second-up effort. She ran into a smart type, Nasdaq Dubai, and while the winning was impressive, we thought Daytona Gal’s run had plenty of merit from last in the small field. The big track at Newcastle on Monday should suit this filly by Sebring, and should see her flying down the outside again. This time she finds a big field with plenty of speed, so Daytona Gal should get a better chance to wind up. Barrier 12 isn’t ideal; however, she’ll be getting back again regardless and if she handles conditions, she can go one better this time.
