HorseBetting’s New South Wales form analyst brings you his best bet and quaddie numbers for the eight-race program at Newcastle on Tuesday, March 22. At the time of writing, the track is rated a Soft 6, while the rail will be out 6m from the 800m to the 400m and then out just 3m for the remainder of the course. The first race is set to jump at 1:15pm AEDT.
Best Bet – Chimes
In the second race of the day, two nice fillies – Chimes and Audette – do battle in an 1150m Class 1 Handicap. We are siding with the former, who is trained by Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott and coming out of Group racing in Victoria. The three-year-old filly by Snitzel won her maiden when on debut at this track, before tackling a competitive 2YO Fillies Handicap at The Valley, before running four lengths behind Gimmie Par and Heresy in the Group 3 Quezette Stakes at Caulfield on August 14. She defeated California Zimbol in her first trial back this preparation, before having a quiet time of it behind Cape Breton at the beginning of March. She will take some catching in her first-up run, but we do have plenty of respect for impressive debut winner Audette.
Next Best – Five Crowns
While Five Crowns is a terrific card game, the horse also goes pretty well too. The four-year-old gelding has had three starts for two wins and a second, and now resumes in a very winnable Benchmark 66 over 1350m. The Kris Lees-trained son of Sacred Falls won on debut at Muswellbrook in October over 1280m, before winning over this distance on the Beaumont track at Newcastle three weeks later. Despite being bred to handle heavy tracks, his only defeat came on a Heavy 8 at Port Macquarie, but it would be fair to say that the horse had enough racing for his first preparation, so Lees gave him a well-earned spell. On the back of a winning trial at Wyong, Five Crowns can resume as a winner on Tuesday.
Next Best Again – Members Only
Nathan Doyle and in-form hoop Ashley Morgan combine in the second leg of the quaddie with four-year-old gelding Members Only. The son of Toronado has only won one of his 10 career starts, but he is rarely far away coming of a 0.04-length defeat at this track on March 5 over 1880m. Doyle will now step his gelding out to 2100m, and while it will be the first time that he will race over a genuine staying trip, he has shown plenty of evidence that he will handle it. He is going to get back from gate three, but we are confident that he can finish the race off strongly enough to get the job done.
