Racing heads to the hunter region of New South Wales on Tuesday with Newcastle Racecourse hosting a competitive eight-race program. The rail is out +9m the entire circuit, and although the course is listed as a Heavy 9 at the time of writing, we’re confident we’ll be racing on a drying track around the Soft range for race-day. The first race is set to get underway at 11:50am AEST.
Best Bet at Newcastle: Mount Warning
Race four on the Newcastle program is a BM64 for the fillies and mares, where we’ll be siding with the Joseph Pride-trained Mount Warning. This daughter of Astern looks to be thriving heading into her third start of the preparation, as the first resulted in her maiden victory. She was left flatfooted turning for home at her latest start at Warwick Farm on May 17, however, and now stepping up to the 1250m looks ideal for a galloper that takes a long time to wind up. Once she hits top gear Mount Warning has the speed to kick clear of her rivals, and hopefully find her second career win on Tuesday afternoon.

Next Best at Newcastle: Piraeus
Tuesday will see the return of Piraeus from a 122-day spell and we’re confident he can take out the penultimate race to find the winner’s enclosure upon resumption. He won two races on the trot at one stage last preparation before going off the boil towards the end of the campaign; however, his barrier trials leading into this first-up assignment suggest he can comeback to the track at his peak. His latest trial caught the eye at Rosehill on May 19 and was ridden up behind some quality types to finish third under his own steam. Apprentice jockey Stephen Mooney takes the reins for the first time and takes off a significant 3kgs after the claim for Piraeus. He draws awkwardly from barrier 12, but if he can be ridden forward to find a position, Piraeus should be right in the finish.

Best Value at Newcastle: Commandant
We’ll be looking forward to finishing the day with some value as the Kris Lees-trained Commandant represents great value with online bookmakers. She’s now third-up into the campaign since arriving in Australia, and although she’s been a little underwhelming to date, getting to the 1600m couldn’t come at a better time. She’s now got the fitness under her belt to stick with them at the jump and should look to tag the back of the leaders from barrier two. She finally gets her chance back to BM64 level, and if she’s not competitive here, she might struggle to recapture her best.
