Christmas Eve racing out of South Australia comes from Murray Bridge on Saturday for a competitive nine-race card. With perfect conditions forecast and the rail in the true position throughout, there should be no excuses for fancied runners — especially considering we should see an upgrade from a Good 4 to a Good 3 at some point. The day of racing gets underway at 12:18pm ACDT.
Best Bet at Murray Bridge: Pudding
Our best bet at Murray Bridge comes up nice and early in the program, with the Richard & Chantelle Jolly-trained Pudding searching for a third win from five starts this campaign. The four-year-old gelding smashed his rivals in a similar field on the Parks track at Morphettville on December 3 when settling midfield, peeling wide on the turn and sprinting clear to win by three-lengths. This field is no harder and as long as Jake Toeroek does not get trapped three wide the trip from barrier six, Pudding showed last time he is armed with an explosive turn of foot which should be more than good enough for this. A real load up job it feels.

Next Best at Murray Bridge: Smokin’ Val
Despite being a 69-rater in a BM82, the Jon O’Connor-trained simply looks perfectly weighted and placed by the stable in the second race on Saturday. She has finished second in three of her past four races and despite having just two career wins from 24 starts, she comes up against five rivals who also struggle to find the winning post. Allocated 54kg, Stacey Callow’s 3kg claim means she goes around with just 51kg on her back, an 8kg weight advantage over market fancies Manhatten Times and One More Jack (7kg). We expect Callow to take the mare towards the front of the field and if she can land the one-one early, the race may be sewn up early. She has a strong turn of foot and for the first time in over a year, Smokin’ Val should just simply be winning.

Best Value at Murray Bridge: Hasta La Missile
Having won in emphatic fashion at Naracoorte at his last two starts, Sue Murphy brings Hasta La Missile to the Murray Bridge 1200m and looks well-placed to bring up a third win on the trot. The four-year-old Smart Missile gelding managed to give his rivals a start and a beating two starts back, before settling on the leaders heels last time out and was running away from his rivals when saluting. He draws barrier one on Saturday and with market fancies Test The Law and Crackhorn expected to lead the field up, Jake Toeroek can take a trail and sprint clear once the gap comes. He may lack a bit of class on his rivals, but with a bit of untapped ability about him, Hasta La Missile looks a great bet at $12 with online bookmakers.
