Country racing heads to Mudgee on Sunday afternoon with a competitive seven-race program set for decision. The rail is out 4m between the 900m-600m and true the remainder of the course, while the Soft 6 track listed on Friday could see an upgrade heading into the weekend. The first race is scheduled to get underway at 12:41pm AEST.
Best Bet: Four O’clock Knock
Four O’clock Knock is yet to break his maiden status in four career starts and now looks to BM58 company to get the job done. He was unfortunate not to beat Aunt Roberta last start at Wyong on April 27 and hit the line with vigour beaten by a nose. He gave the winner a start but cut up the inside, almost stealing a victory in the process for the Bjorn Baker stable. He’s been ultra-consistent without getting the job done and now should improve enough to find the winner’s enclosure. He draws barrier two to get an ideal run in transit, and with Brandon Lerena maintaining the ride on this son of Sacred Falls, we expect a bold showing in race two on the program.

Next Best: Songbird Star
Songbird Star is the only first-starter in the opening race on Sunday afternoon, and we’re willing to put her on top regardless of her unexposed form. Her two barrier trials have suggested a galloper possessing plenty of ability – particularly her latest trial at Newcastle on April 26. It was a genuine hitout for this daughter of Stratum Star as she powered to the line nicely with Aaron Bullock on board. Bullock elects to stick with this unraced three-year-old, and with an economical run expected throughout the 1200m, it’s easy to why. She has more upside than most of her rivals here, so we’ll be hoping Songbird Star can make her debut a winning one.

Best Value: Ferro Vero
Ferro Vero is an unraced two-year-old from the Paul Messara yard who looks a terrific each-way bet. This son of Japanese sire Real Steel has had only had one jump-out, on April 13 at Muswellbrook, and caught the eye when clearing out on his rivals alongside the eventual winner, Altisima. That horse debuted as a strong runner-up and we think Ferro Vero was the more impressive of the two in the barrier trial; so with that in mind, our guy should only need to replicate that trial form to be competitive on Sunday. We’re getting an each-way price with the top betting sites for Ferro Vero, so we’re happy to take the risk despite the unknown quantities about him.
