Racing returns to Morphettville on Saturday afternoon, and HorseBetting.com.au’s South Australian form analyst brings you his best bets and top quaddie numbers for the nine-race card on Spring Stakes Day. The track is rated a Heavy 9, and the meeting is scheduled to start at 11:47am ACST (12:17pm AEST).
Spring Stakes Top Tip: Beau Rossa
The Group 3 Spring Stakes over 1200m is the feature event on Saturday’s card, and despite Memsie Stakes winner Behemoth and Doncaster Handicap placegetter Dalasan involved, we are siding with the race-fit Beau Rossa following a dominant display in the Lightning Stakes on July 31. The Will Clarken-trained gelding put over three lengths on 2020 Lightning Stakes winner Parlophone on a Heavy 9, and considering Behemoth has struggled on wet tracks in recent times, we are happy to take on the race favourite here. From barrier two, Beau Rossa draws to do no work in the running, and if he produces the same turn of foot as he did in the Lightning Stakes, he should be too strong for this field with a touch of race fitness on his side.
Morphettville Best Bet: Keep Reading
Our best bet at Morphettville comes in the opening event, where the Richard & Chantelle Jolly-trained Keep Reading will look to continue what has been a solid start to his career. The three-year-old Headwater gelding was an impressive winner over the Morphettville 1100m on a Heavy track on July 24, so he should be hard to beat stepping up to 1200m on another Heavy 9. He will roll forward under the riding of Jake Toeroek and will most likely take a sit off the leaders, where he should get a nice cart into the race. He showed a nice turn of foot last time out, and if he replicates that performance on Saturday, he should be simply too good for this lot.
Next Best at Morphettville: Mahis Angel
One of the better bets on the card comes when the Travis Doudle-trained Mahis Angel steps out in the third event looking to make it three wins in succession. The six-year-old son of Mahisara has been dominant in his past two wins, winning by a combined margin of 8.75 lengths. His last-start win over this track and distance came on July 24 when putting over five lengths on Lord Bouzeron back in second place. He only goes up half a kilo from that win, and remaining at 2500m looks to be no issue for him considering the lack of depth in this field. Paul Gatt will look to settle him midfield with cover from barrier seven, and as he has shown recently, Mahis Angel will sustain a long run from the 800m and prove too good for this BM78 field.
Best Value at Morphettville: Keysor
In the third leg of the quaddie, the Kristi Evans-trained Keysor is pushing for a third win in succession and presents great value at $14 with Ladbrokes. The seven-year-old son of All Too Hard has a formidable Heavy track record (5:2-1-1), with both of his wins coming at his previous two starts. At Gawler on July 29 he sustained a long run from the rear of the field and managed to hold a length back to Royal Bower despite looking vulnerable late. If it is a day that suits backmarkers, the in-form Keysor looms as a great each-way prospect in this No Metro Wins field.
