Autumn racing in South Australia is heating up as Auraria Stakes Day greets us at Morphettville on Saturday afternoon. Perfect conditions for racing are forecast with the track coming up a Good 4, and despite the rail being out 8m from the 1200m to the winning post and out 6m the remainder, every horse should get their chance. Saturday’s nine-race card is set to commence at 12:12pm ACST (12:42pm AEST).
AURARIA STAKES TOP TIP: Bon’s A Pearla
Considering the Kevin Corstens-trained Bon’s A Pearla was beaten a touch over a length two starts back by Hitotsu in the Australian Guineas, she looks a clear top selection in the Group 3 Auraria Stakes. The three-year-old filly has since gone within a half-length of Daises in the Alexandra Stakes at The Valley on William Reid Stakes night, suggesting she will take some beating in this. In the field of 12, she will be giving her rivals a bit of a start, but with proven Group 1 form, she looks to a have a bit of class on a majority of these. With race favourite Mac ‘N’ Cheese also looking to settle at the rear, it may just come down to who will finish the better. Bon’s A Pearla is armed with a sharp turn of foot, and we expect to see her further stamp her Australasian Oaks credentials.
PORT ADELAIDE GUINEAS TOP TIP: Daisies
Considering Daisies got the better of Bon’s A Pearla in the Alexandra Stakes, we expect the Mick Price & Michael Kent Jr-trained filly to get the better of the boys in the Port Adelaide Guineas. She is just one of five fillies competing in the race and despite drawing barrier 10, will look to get back and charge home down the centre of the track. During the spring she was beaten a half-length by subsequent VRC Oaks winner Willowy over 2000m in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes, so we know the 1800m will not be an issue. She is clearly a filly with a staying future and with the Australasian Oaks not too far away, we expect Daises to be taking out the Port Adelaide Guineas on her way to potential Group 1 glory.
BEST BET AT MORPHETTVILLE: Elite Icon
Our best bet of the day comes when the formidable combination of the Tony & Calvin McEvoy yard and Barend Vorster combine once again, this time with Elite Icon. The three-year-old gelding is yet to miss the top two in each of his four starts, picking up two wins along the way in emphatic style. Having led the field up at Moonee Valley on March 4, the Nicconi gelding managed to kick clear on the home turn and in doing so showed plenty of class. He will need to lug 61kg on Saturday for his first Adelaide assignment, but from barrier one draws to do no work, if they opt to take a sit off noted leader Daring Move. He has a high cruising speed and as long as he avoids any bad luck, Elite Icon looks a clear best bet of the day.
NEXT BEST AT MORPHETTVILLE: Aitch Two Oh
Considering Aitch Two Oh put five-lengths on her closest rivals when resuming over 1000m on March 26, the Richard & Chantelle Jolly-trained filly looks to be a sprinter who oozes class. The Headwater filly draws barrier one on Saturday and under Jake Toeroek we anticipate she will be too speedy for this lot in the Listed Dequetteville Stakes. Having put a combined 9.2 lengths on her rivals in both of her career wins, she is clearly a speedy filly and the extra 50m as she steps up to the 1050m should be no issue. We expect the plan to be simple, jump cleanly, hold the rail and run the opposition into the ground by burning the candle at both ends. The $3.30 on offer from online betting sites looks a perfect quote to load into.
BEST VALUE AT MORPHETTVILLE: Flow Meter
Call us crazy, but we are giving the 12-year-old marvel Flow Meter a big push in the second race of the day for his 192nd career start. The John Hickmott & Carrina Riggs-trained brown gelding gave his rivals a start and a beating at Oakbank on March 30 in a display that shows there is plenty of life still in his old legs. He needs his races to be run at a genuine tempo, which he should get on Saturday considering he is a get back and run on type of horse. With Lord Bouzeron and Prince Of Fences set to make this a genuinely run 2032m event, we expect to see Flow Meter grinding his way home and ultimately being the one who finishes off the best. The $31 on offer from PlayUp looks a ridiculously good price to take.
