Metropolitan racing in Adelaide on Saturday afternoon is set be held on the course proper at Morphettville, where the action will get underway at 12:07pm ACDT (12:37pm AEDT). HorseBetting’s James Herbert brings you his best bets and quaddie numbers for the nine-race program, including a tip in the featured Manihi Classic (1100m). The track has come up a Good 4, with rail out 6m for the entire course.
MANIHI CLASSIC TIP: LOMBARDO
Having been well held at Flemington when resuming on March 19, the Mick Price & Michael Kent Jr-trained Lombardo looks awfully hard to beat on Saturday in the Listed Manihi Classic. He seemingly looked in need of the run on that day and coming to Morphettville second-up looks the recipe for success for last spring’s Manikato Stakes pre-race favourite. Having bolted in over 1200m at Morphettville in the spring, he clearly will handle the track and with Zac Spain hopping back on board it looks to be a clear signal of intent from the stable. From barrier nine, look for Spain to stalk the breakneck speed that Spanish Heirloom will set and with about 200m to go, we expect Lombardo to cruise up to his rival and put the field away with relative ease. Take the $2.70 on offer from Neds and run.
BEST BET AT MORPHETTVILLE: Deep Speed
We need to be patient on Saturday as our best bet of the day is set to jump in the final race, with the Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Deep Speed set to compete over 1200m. The four-year-old gelding has always had a handy reputation of being an above average sprinter but is lacking the winning confidence he had to start his career. He has built into his work nicely this campaign with a narrow defeat to the in form All Banter and chased home the smart Struck By last time out when finishing second over 1300m. He steps back to the 1200m on Saturday and considering his one win from one start at the track and trip, this looks to be the perfect race for him. From barrier 15, Campbell Rawiller will have no other choice but to roll forward and have him settled outside the leader. As long as he doesn’t get caught wide, he is clearly the best horse in the race and a clear best bet on Saturday.
NEXT BEST AT MORPHETTVILLE: Designs
One of our better bets of the day comes up in the opening event when the Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Designs looks to bring up consecutive wins for the first time in her career. The Vancouver mare strikes a small field which on paper looks no harder than the one she put a decent gap on last time out, which included subsequent Moonee Valley winner Look Sharpish back in second. From barrier seven, we expect Zac Spain to take luck out of the equation and have the bay mare bounding along out in front and dictate terms to his liking. She will stay all day and with the natural front-running abilities to her name, Designs looks simply too hard to run down in the opening event.
BEST VALUE AT MORPHETTVILLE: Knightstown
Despite not tasting success in close to seven months, we’re willing to give the Gordon Richards & Damien Moyle-trained Knightstown a push over 1200m. Having chased home subsequent winner Mac ‘N’ Cheese and Hopon Harry when resuming at this track and trip the three-year-old Valentia gelding looks well placed to turn the tables on his rival Hopon Harry on Saturday. When they last met, our guy had to lug 2.5kg more than his opponent and with a 2kg weight swing since that meeting in his favour this time round, we’re happy to take the price on offer for Knightstown. He draws barrier five and looks set to settle in the one-one throughout the event and armed with a nice turn of foot, he presents great value at $8.50 with online betting sites.
