The Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m), first held in 1864 headlines the action on a stacked nine-race program out of Morphettville on Monday afternoon. Joined by the Listed Cinderella Stakes, Listed C.S. Hayes Cup, Listed Matrice Stakes and the Listed Morphettville Guineas we are set to see plenty of impressive horse flesh go around at the home of racing South Australia.
With perfect conditions forecast, we expect to start on a Good 4, with the rail in the true position for the meeting commencing at 12:30pm AEDT.

Race 1: BM72 Handicap (1600m)
Adelaide Cup Day kicks off with a competitive BM72 over the mile and following a pipe-opening run over 1400m on the Morphettville Parks track first-up, Boolcunda King looks the one to side with in the opener. The Peter & Belinda Blanch-trained runner has three wins from four goes at the trip, including when second-up in early 2022. The Dedline gelding relishes firmer ground and should get that on Monday, which will allow him to build through his gears from the rear of the field perfectly. Caliburn and Ichibansan will make this a genuinely run 1600m event, so look for Boolcunda King to be swooping on his rivals late and proving too hard to hold out under Dom Tourneur.

Race 2: 3YO BM70 Handicap (1200m)
We look to build a bit of a bank early on Monday as the Henry Dwyer-trained Prairie Flower looks to find her way back into the winner’s stall. The three-year-old filly hasn’t tasted success since her win at Ballarat on the synthetic track in August last year, but this Star Turn filly has simply been racing in tougher events than this since that day and looks a great play. She was a touch outclassed at Flemington behind the likes of Arctic Fairy and Little Miss Kubi last time out, but her run three back over 1200m at the same track suggests she is more than capable here. She finished third behind Pacific Ruby on that day when settling off the pace and finishing off strongly. Will Price claiming 1.5kg is a big help and if Prairie Flower is near her best, then the $10 with online betting sites looks to be ridiculous value.

Race 3: BM68 Handicap (1200m)
Kenyan Wonder bought up a long overdue win last time out at this track and trip a fortnight ago and we anticipate she will go on with the job on Monday. The seven-year-old mare has won five of her 20 starts at this track and trip and considering he is rock hard fit and sure to appreciate a genuine tempo, Kenyan Wonder is going to take a power of holding out. Todd Pannell will have her at the rear of the field throughout, but if Pannell can have her out of trouble, she’ll be charging home late and hopefully salute at a nice price.

Race 4: Listed Cinderella Stakes (1050m)
Our best bet of the day comes up in the Listed Cinderella Stakes as the Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Tiz Enuf can make it two wins from as many starts. The two-year-old filly managed to lead throughout untouched at Sale on debut over 1103m so the trip will be no issue at all. The Rich Enuff filly draws barrier one which is ideal and with Ben Melham coming over and sticking on board, everything points towards another victory for the filly. If Melham can have her racing within herself whilst leading once again, she showed she has plenty under the bonnet and a repeat performance should be more than good enough to claim the Listed Cinderella Stakes.

Race 5: Listed C.S. Hayes Cup (1600m)
Dalasan was quite disappointing first-up from a spell in the Listed Elms Handicap at Flemington, but we expect him to bounce back as he returns to his home track on Monday. The six-year-old has seven starts at the track for four wins and two seconds and despite needing to lug 61kg on Monday, he looks the one to beat on class alone. He draws to gain a perfect run in transit under Jason Holder from barrier three and if he can gain a nice cart into the race behind a runner like En Francais, we expect Dalasan’s class to shine throughout late on over 1600m and bring up a ninth wins at his 41st start.

Race 6: Listed Matrice Stakes (1200m)
Opening the quaddie is the Listed Matrice Stakes over 1200m and one of our better bets of the day Philonize is without a doubt the horse to beat on Monday. The four-year-old mare has a genuine will to win, having tasted success six times in 10 starts and considering she has four wins from five starts on the course proper at Morphettville, she is going to take a power of beating in the Matrice. She goes around with just 54.5kg on her back and with regular jockey Ben Price sticking on board, we expect the plan to be simple; jump cleanly, lead, kick clear and win. The $2.80 on offer with online bookmakers looks a steal for Philonize.

Race 7: Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m)
The Group 2 Adelaide Cup for 2023 has attracted a strong field of 16 stayers looking to etch their name into the record books and we expect the Chris Waller-trained Chalk Stream to bounce back from a poor showing last time out. The five-year-old gelding just simply didn’t handle Moonee Valley by the looks of things in the Listed Torney Night Cup, but his near three-length romp in the Listed Australia Day Cup suggests he will be hard to hold out in Monday’s feature. He only needs to lug 55kg and if Jye McNeil can have him lobbed midfield with cover from barrier 15, he has plenty of class about him and there is no reason why he cannot bring up his second win the three starts in the Adelaide Cup.

Race 8: Listed Morphettville Guineas (1600m)
The Listed Morphettville Guineas looks a perfect race for the Aaron Purcell-trained Dashing to register a black-type victory alongside his name. The three-year-old gelding was a gritty winner at Sandown on the Lakeside circuit last time out over the mile and based on that and what he did in tougher races last campaign, he is sure to take some beating. From barrier six, Ben Melham will look to stalk one of the market fancies Stonecoat wherever that horse goes and once Dashing sees clear air, we expect him to dash clear in the Morphettville Guineas.

Race 9: BM78 Handicap (1050m)
We will be siding with favourite punters in the last on Monday when the Robert Hickmott-trained Taunting returns from a four-month spell. The four-year-old gelding was going around in tougher races than what he faces on Monday and it’s hard to see how he gets beaten having drawn barrier two. Chris Parnham hops on board this son of Brazen Beau and if he can hold the rails and take a sit off what should be good speed, Taunting has shown he is armed with a strong turn of foot and despite needing to lug 60kg, only bad luck will get Taunting beaten in the last.
