What Morphettville Finals Day
Where Morphettville Racecourse – 79 Morphett Rd, Morphettville SA 5043
When Saturday, November 12, 2022
First Race 12:17pm ACDT

Racing returns to the Morphettville main track on Saturday for the club’s Finals Day, with all nine races on the card serving as the main event for horses have qualified throughout the year. The track is currently rated a Good 4, but there is rain on the forecast for Friday night and Saturday, so we may be on a deteriorating track come raceday. The rail will be in the 8m position for the entire circuit, and racing kicks off at 12:17pm ACDT.

Morphettville Best Bet: Montign

In the Happy Trails Final over 1600m we will be siding with the Gawler Cup winner and Stuart Padman-trained Montign, who has been very good this preparation, recording two wins from four starts. This five-year-old gelding has built an impressive career record, winning seven of his first 15 starts. This son of Ambidexter displayed his “push-button” turn of foot last start as he got to the outside of the Gawler Cup field and let go with a booming to finish to nab Hankstar right on the finish line. Kayla Crowther will take the ride on this talented gelding on Saturday, and from barrier four she should be able to get this guy into the one-one or another pair back off the rail and not have to go right to the back of the field, like last time out. There is a lot of speed in this race with two or three natural leaders, so if Crowther lets the speed go and drops in behind them, this guy will have every chance to finish down the outside and run over the leaders late.

Next Best Bet at Morphettville: Smokin’ Val

The Riziz Series Final for the speedsters over 1100m will have the Jon O’Connor-trained Smokin’ Val engaged and we will be siding with her after two very encouraging runs first and second-up over 1050m at this track. This five-year-old mare will be better for her first two runs this preparation and she now gets up to 1100m, at trip that she has only ever missed the placings once from four starts. This daughter of Valentia likes to get right back in her races and run home strong. However, from barrier five on Saturday and considering there is a lot of pace in this race, we expect to see Madison Lloyd settle just worse than mid-field, which should hopefully mean she doesn’t have to make up as much ground as usual. This girl will want to see a genuine tempo up front and if she gets to the outside, in clear air, she should be too strong for this field in the concluding stages.

Best Value at Morphettville: Busker’s Ballad

The Skybeau Series Final will be the only race on the day for the stayers over 2500m and we will be siding with the Ryan Balfour-trained Busker’s Ballad, who ran an outstanding race over 2008m last start after having to sustain a three-wide run for the last 800m. Even though this eight-year-old gelding didn’t get the win last start, that run will top him off perfectly for this fourth-up run over 2500m. This son of Street Cry has never won at the 2500m but he has won at 2250m and finished second, twice, and third, once, at this trip. There is no doubt in our mind that this guy will run out a strong 2500m and at $10 with online bookmakers we are more than happy to have something on him.
