Mornington Racecourse is scheduled to host an eight-race card on Wednesday afternoon and Horsebetting’s Victorian tipping expert presents his best bets, free quaddie picks and top odds from online bookmakers. The track is rated a Good 4, with the rail out 2m, for the meeting commencing at 1:35pm AEDT.
Mornington Best Bet – Sniper Legend
The John Sadler-trained Sniper Legend is yet to finish outside of the top two in his four career starts and boasts a handy win at Wyong earlier in the year. The three-year-old son Capitalist as held up at a crucial point on his Victorian debut on December 14 at the Mornington 1000m, so he did well to be beaten by a nose. He steps up to the 1200m here and from barrier three, we expect Michael Dee will take luck out of the equation and look to dictate terms out in front. His sole career win came on Heavy ground, but with two runner-up efforts to his name on firmer decks, Sniper Legend looks to be a clear best bet of the day at Mornington.
Next Best Bet at Mornington – Inner Spirit
Ciaron Maher & David Eustace will be hoping Inner Spirit can go one better than his last start second at the Mornington 1200m, when he returns to the track and distance on Wednesday. The three-year-old son of Wandjina was rolled as a $1.60 favourite on December 3 when leading the field up and tiring late on in the piece. He will need a touch of luck from barrier 13 on Thursday, but with next to no early pace engaged in this race, the bay gelding is set to gain an uncontested lead out in front. Under a well rated ride from Johnny Allen out in front, it should be third time lucky in terms of breaking through for a maiden win
Best Value Bet at Mornington – Night Hussler
The Lloyd Kennewell-trained Night Hussler was an impressive winner when getting up on the line at Cranbourne last time out and looks well-placed to go on with it here. Having settled well back over 1400m, the four-year-old Reliable Man mare gave them a massive start but managed to grab the leaders late in smart fashion. He will need to settle a touch closer in this BM64, but from barrier six, we expect Michael Poy to have him settled midfield with cover. If he can do so, he showed a good turn of foot last time out and if he can do something similar on Wednesday, he should take some holding out at a nice price.
