Racing heads to Mornington on Tuesday afternoon for an eight-part card, and HorseBetting’s Victorian form analyst presents his best bets and free quaddie selections for the day. The track is rated a Good 4, the rail is in the true position, and the meeting is set to commence at 1:30pm AEDT.
Mornington Best Bet – Missy Longport
Our best bet at Mornington comes up in the opening event of the day, where the Cindy Alderson-trained Missy Longport steps out over 1600m. Having finished second on debut over 1450m at Kyneton, where she went to the lead but found one better over the final 100m, the step up to the mile second-up looks ideal. Brian Higgins retains the ride, and from barrier eight he will need to have her out and running early, but considering the duo is set to get an uncontested lead, we expect the Shalaa filly will prove too hard to run down and break her maiden at start two.
Next Best Bet at Mornington – Gateaux
Leon & Troy Corstens send Gateaux to the Mornington 1600m following a Wangaratta maiden win on December 2, and she looks well placed to handle the step up into BM58 company. Having settled midfield with cover on that day, the four-year-old Pierro mare managed to make ground before the home turn and let down with strong intent to claim victory in dominant fashion. She draws barrier eight here and will need a bit of luck under Chloe Azzopardi to find cover in midfield once again. If Gateaux is afforded that luxury, then we expect her turn of foot to have her fighting out the finish.
Best Value Bet at Mornington – Stirrup
The Mark Stephenson-trained Stirrup looks a good shout at odds in the final leg of the quaddie, with the five-year-old gelding winning two of his last three starts. One of those wins came two starts back at the Mornington 1200m on November 18, when he went around at a similar quote to what he goes around at on Tuesday. He will look to roll forward from barrier seven under Kiran Quilty, and with the apprentice’s 2kg claim they’ll look to make this a genuine 1000m sprint. With race fitness on his side and an ability to burn the candle at both ends, we expect Sitrrup to lead throughout this BM58 affair and prove too hard to run down at a nice price.
