The Listed Mornington Cup (2400m) headlines a 10-race meeting on the Peninsula this Saturday, with the feature winner gaining entry to the 2024 Caulfield Cup. Perfect conditions for racing await, with the track likely to be upgraded to a Good 4 from the current Soft 5 rating, while the rail will stick to its true position. Mornington Cup Day action is set to commence at 11:50am AEST.
Mornington Cup Tip: Nereus
Kiwi raider Nereus brings exemplary form to his Australian debut, winning four of his last five races — including the Group 2 Awapuni Gold Cup (2100m) on April 6. The four-year-old gelding is armed with a strong turn of foot for a stayer, and with just 56kg on his back under handicap conditions, he gets the perfect opportunity to strike. Michael McNab will have the son of Savabeel settled in the second half of the field, and as long as he can handle the unique Mornington track, Nereus looks the one to beat.

Hareeba Stakes Tip: The Inferno
While he hasn’t won in close to three years, Cliff Brown’s The Inferno ran second in the Listed Hareeba Stakes (1200m) last year and brings in decent form as he looks to go one better. Two starts back he finished three lengths off Imperatriz in Group 1 company, before peaking on his run slightly over 1400m in Group 3 company at Caulfield. He is a six-time winner at 1200m, and with a breakneck tempo expected, The Inferno will look to absorb the pressure and power over his rivals late.

Best Bet at Mornington: Sea What I See
Danny O’Brien’s Sea What I See has been faultless this campaign, winning each of his four starts in impressive style. The four-year-old mare capped her rise through the grades with a dominant 2.3-length triumph at Flemington over 2000m, and she stays at the trip on her first look at Mornington. Jamie Mott takes the reins for the first time, and if the pair can slot in midfield with cover, Sea What I Sea should blow her rivals away in the quaddie opener.

Next Best at Mornington: Ranveer
Ranveer was a good thing beaten on this day last year, which was the last time we saw him at the races. A handy jumpout win at this track on March 27 points to a positive performance on his return. The five-year-old has always been blessed with natural speed, and if Ethan Brown can have him stalking the speed throughout, Ranveer’s turn of foot should be more than good enough to account for his rivals.

Best Value at Mornington: Disturbia
Disturbia has been racing well without winning in recent times, finishing second in her last three starts. The four-year-old mare is a natural frontrunner, and in a race that lacks much pace, the Emma-Lee & David Browne-trained mare should have no issues in dictating terms. Declan Bates will partner the Turn Me Loose filly, and despite hardly being up to Pride Of Jenni standards, Disturbia will prove hard to run down under a well-rated steer.
