For the first time since March 25, racing returns to Moonee Valley on a Saturday afternoon, and with a bit of luck HorseBetting’s form expert can steer you into a couple of winners. As the 2021/22 racing season comes to an end and the spring approaches, we start to see some of the Group-quality horses return this weekend. We are set to be racing on a Soft 5 with the rail out 3m for the entire circuit, while the action at The Valley gets underway at 12:45pm AEST.
Best Bet at Moonee Valley: Chief Altony
Our best bet of the day comes up in the penultimate event as the Alex Rae-trained Chief Altony returns to Victoria following a third-place finish in the Listed Winter Stakes at Randwick. Having been aided by a gun run, the five-year-old gelding was still defeated 2.5 lengths by the in-form pair of Taksu and Jojo Was A Man. That type of opposition isn’t going around in this BM100 over the mile, and considering this son of Rebel Raider is the horse with most upside in the race, he simply looks too hard to beat. Following Will Price’s 1.5kg claim, the Chief goes around with just 51.5kg on his back, and with a wet track record of 12: 3-6-2, we know he will handle the conditions with aplomb. Look for Price to have him settled just worse than midfield. Armed with a strong turn of foot, Chief Altony should blow his rivals away in this.

Next Best at Moonee Valley: D’aguilar
We do not need to wait around at all for our next pick, as the Patrick Payne-trained D’aguilar steps out in the opener over 2040m. The five-year-old gelding is racing in fine form, and despite finishing fourth at Flemington on July 16, the six-year-old gelding was only beaten under a length. The field of six should benefit this bloke as well as anyone, being a genuine backmarker. His main market rival with online bookmakers, Not Usual Glorious, will make this a genuinely run affair, which looks like it will perfectly set up the opportunity for D’aguilar to finish over the top under Billy Egan.

Best Value at Moonee Valley: Prix De Turn
The Matthew Brown-trained Prix De Turn is a horse on the way up, and based on his win in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes at the Moonee Valley 2040m, he looks hard to beat when he resumes on Saturday. The three-year-old colt won two of his four starts during his autumn campaign, with his only failures coming in the Autumn Stakes behind Coastwatch and then two runs later behind Hitotsu in the Australian Guineas. Those types of form lines stack up incredibly well in a race like this. He will need to lug 60kg first-up following Thomas Stockdale’s 2kg claim, but with an easy trial under his belt, we are happy to take the double figures on offer with online betting sites for Prix De Turn. He looks to have a bit of class about him.
