There’s a ‘whisper’ tyro Rear View Mirror could be the “next big thing” in coursing.
He’s only been officially ‘slipped’ on three occasions, but is entered for the first round of the Waterloo Cup – coursing’s ‘holy grail’ – at Lang Lang on Saturday.
So, I went ‘through the looking glass’ to discover more about this potential coursing wunderkind who turns 18-months-old on September 1.
Trained by John Bosnich at Devon Meadows, Rear View Mirror (Mar ’19 Bernardo x Tyra Giselle) is up against coursing royalty on the weekend.
But Bosnich says Rear View Mirror’s mission is “not a throw at the stumps”.
“He’s been mixing it with some good dogs and is up to this level… And his times are good enough to get him through,” he said. “He’s improving all the time, but we’re not putting too much pressure on him.”
Rear View Mirror is yet to race on the circle and has only had three coursing outings for a win and runner-up.
“He’s only young, but he’s very mature for his age… He does everything right,” Bosnich added.
Owned by the ‘Unleashed Racing’ syndicate, managed by Rowan Wagenaar, Rear View Mirror is superbly bred. His maternal granddam is ‘Hall of Fame’ inductee, Paua To Burn.
A maintenance manager at Courtenay Gardens Primary School in Cranbourne North, Bosnich has only been training for four years and admits – like Rear View Mirror– he’s still learning the caper.
“I’ve previously owned a few greyhounds, but they never reached the racetrack,” he said. “But I’ve always had a passion for the sport… And greyhounds are amazing animals; I’ve really fallen in love with them.”
Bosnich will be hoping Rear View Mirror only ‘sees’ what’s behind him on Saturday.
