Group 1 racing returns to Flemington with the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) headlining Saturday’s 10-race meeting. Despite just eight runners set to compete for the $750,000 on offer, each is a previous Group 1 victor and will be looking to further etch themselves into racing folklore. Will Via Sistina claim further Group 1 success? Can Mr Brightside claim back-to-back wins in the race? Or will Pride Of Jenni bounce back from a poor first-up run?

Having claimed the Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m) first-up, the Chris Waller-trained Via Sistina heads the Makybe Diva Stakes betting with horse racing bookmakers at a $2.20 quote. Mr Brightside ($3.90) and Pride Of Jenni ($6.50) will likely shorten as the race approaches with their big fanbases. Memsie Stakes winner Pinstriped ($8) is the only other runner at a single-figure quote. Antino ($15) and Atishu ($16) are the best of the rest, while it is almost write-your-own-ticket stuff for Warmonger ($31) and Circle Of Fire ($91), who are building into Cups campaigns.

Is there a more obvious leader in a race, ever? Pride Of Jenni will look to lead the field throughout and won’t have much competition. She was woeful in the Memsie Stakes but did have a stack of pressure on her. Arch-nemesis Mr Brightside and Memsie winner Pinstriped will likely be the ones dragging the field up to Jenni. From there, the likes of Via Sistina, Antino and Atishu will be looking to remain in striking range before launching late.

Antino lost all hope of winning when bombing the start in the Memsie Stakes, yet he still had the audacity to hit the line strongly when beaten by 3.5 lengths over the 1400m trip. He regains the services of Blake Shinn, who got him to jump cleanly in all three previous rides, and if he can keep on the tail of Mr Brightside, Antino has the finishing burst to cause a minor upset in Saturday’s feature.
There’s no knocking Mr Brightside, who beat all but Pinstriped in a ding-dong battle in the Memsie. From barrier four, Craig Williams will want to keep his key rival within reach at all times, which may leave the defending champ vulnerable inside the final 100m. However, Brightside is as tough as old boots and will take a power of beating second-up.
Via Sistina is a deserving favourite for Saturday’s Group 1. However, the last time she faced Pride Of Jenni, her wheels were spinning a long way out from home on the back of a hectic tempo. Her key rivals on the weekend are used to that sort of pressure, which may leave Via Sistina wanting a long way out. At $2.30, there are too many ‘what ifs’.
Pinstriped cannot be ignored based on his Memsie win, while Pride Of Jenni will take some catching, as she always does. The 2024 Makybe Diva Stakes shapes as a ripping contest.
