The Magic Night Stakes is a Group 3 race for two-year-old fillies, run over 1200m at Rosehill by the Australian Turf Club.
First held in 1975, the Magic Night Stakes serves as a crucial lead-up to the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m), with the winner gaining ballot exemption.
Six fillies have completed the Magic Night–Golden Slipper double, with the most recent being Kiamichi (2019).
Originally run as the Magic Night Quality, it was open to both sexes until 1978. The Magic Night Stakes became a Listed event in 1979, was upgraded to Group 3 in 1980, and reached Group 2 status in 1986 before reverting to Group 3 in 2017.
The 2024 Magic Night Stakes, worth $250,000, was won by Drifting, defeating Fly Fly and Chateau Miraval.
Notable past winners include Bounding Away, Bint Marscay, Victory Vein, Shamekha, Sunlight, and She’s Extreme.

It was a Widden Stud sired trifecta in the 2024 Group 3 ATC Magic Night Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill with first and third home Drifting and Chateau Miraval by first season sire Zousain, while Trapeze Artist filly Fly Fly split the pair to snatch second. Trained by Peter and Paul Snowden, Drifting kicked off her career with an easy win at Hawkesbury last month and then showed her talent with a good second to Bold Bastille in the Listed VRC Furphy Stakes at Flemington on March 2. Returned to Sydney and stepping up to 1200m for the first time, Drifting enjoyed a good run in transit for Tom Sherry and was strong to the line winning by more than a length.

Steel City punched her ticket to the Golden Slipper in emphatic fashion, destroying her rivals in the 2023 Magic Night Stakes. It was redemption for favourite backers as Steel City never got clear running in the 2023 Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes. Jockey Regan Bayliss took all lucky out of the equation this time electing to press forward from the inside barrier and led them along at a steady tempo. Once asked for an effort, Steel City obliged, putting them to bed stylishly to score a 2.7 length win on the line.

She’s Extreme was the final filly to book her spot in the 2022 $5 million Golden Slipper after a 1.44-length win in the Group 3 Magic Night Stakes at Rosehill. The Anthony Cummings-trained two-year-old went into the 1200m event as a drifting $3.30 chance with online bookmakers, proving too tough for Magic Carpet and Swift Sweet. Ridden by Tommy Berry, the daughter of Extreme Choice settled in the back half of the field and run on well to prove too strong in the heavy conditions.
