With the Casino track deemed unsuitable for racing, Lismore steps up to host a big eight-race program this Friday afternoon. The $45,000 Beef Week Cup is the feature event, and with clear skies ahead on the forecast, we’re expecting a Good 4 surface. The rail is out +2.5m between the 950m and 300m and then +1.5m from the 300m to the winning post, while it is set true for the remainder. The first race is set to get underway at 12:15pm AEST.
Beef Week Cup: Montabot
The Matthew Dunn-trained Montabot is set to resume in the 1420m feature after a 20-week spell, and his run before heading to the paddock was a terrific effort behind Sailor at Eagle Farm on January 4. He finished fourth, less than a half-length away, and showed his toughness in the Class 4 performance. He now comes into this first-up with one barrier trial under his belt, and we’re confident this son of Le Havre can produce a peak effort dropping back significantly in grade. Montabot usually has a go-forward pattern, and from barrier eight we expect Brodie Loy to lead throughout to score.

Best Bet: Golden Decade
We’ll be looking for the Matthew Dunn and Brodie Loy combination to salute in the opener as well, as Golden Decade is attempting back-to-back wins. He’s had three starts this preparation, with his latest finally breaking his maiden after some bad luck throughout the campaign. His win came at Ipswich on May 6 in a front-running performance, holding off all challengers to score by just under a length. We’ll be expecting something similar on Friday afternoon with this gelding by Sooboog the likely leader. If Loy can get Golden Decade to jump from the wide draw, he must be considered the one to beat.

Next Best: Fireflies
The third race on the Lismore program is a staying contest over the 2110m where Fireflies looks an outstanding chance. She raced at Eagle Farm on May 3 and finished well out of contention, 4.2 lengths off Mishani Spartan. The veterinary report post-race was telling, however, as it showed this daughter of Not A Single Doubt was galloped on midway throughout the race. Prior to that run, her form stacks up nicely for a BM58, and with a perfect run expected from barrier five, we’re willing to be forgiving and make Fireflies a keen bet.
