King Colorado, hailing from the stables of champion racehorse trainers Ciaron Maher & David Eustace, has successfully earned his place in the Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m).

The scratching of the Bjorn Baker-trained Arapaho has seen the Group 1 Queensland Derby winner gain a start at weight-for-age level at his first start as a three-year-old.

The prominent equine event, formerly known as the Warwick Stakes, is the first Group 1 event of the Sydney Spring Carnival, marking an auspicious beginning of the season.

“He did everything he did on raw ability and a good ride,” Maher said.

“Last prep, when we’d trial him, he’d be a bit on one day, a bit quiet the next day — just immature stuff. That’s why we went to the maiden, and he did everything right there and then raised the bar.”

King Colorado is marked as a $9.50 chance with online bookmakers, with Louise Day gaining a rare Group 1 ride, with King Colorado allocated 50.5kg.
