Amelia’s Jewel might just turn out to be the next West Australian superstar if Saturdays run in the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate at Ascot over 1200m ($500,000) is anything to go by.
The Simon Miller-trained two-year-old filly was sent around as the $1.80 favourite with online bookmakers and justified her short quote by winning by an impressive three lengths, with Baby Paris in second and Penny On The Queen in third.
Miller knew he had something special with Amelia’s Jewel and was desperate to win owner Peter Walsh his first Karrakatta Plate.
“I had the right product,” he said.
“The first time I galloped her I knew we had something special.
“This one just landed on my doorstep and I just had to find the keys.
“He’s just a gentleman to train for (Walsh).
“Even though the track was against us today I just knew she was a freak.”
Amelia’s Jewel didn’t have everything go her way though, jumping from barrier 15 and the track pattern against her, she settled third last in a packed field but jockey Pat Carberry knew he had a motor underneath him.
“No point worrying about track patterns or anything like that,” Carberry said.
“No instructions, you know what to do,” Miller said to Carberry.
Miller also suggested to Carberry pre race that she’s something special by saying she’s got a motor on her.
“She’s a Ferrari mate, don’t worry about the barrier,” Miller said.
