Form analyst Jason Teaz takes a detailed look at tonight’s meeting at Cambridge.
Race 1
7 Montana Jet
5 Wet Flipflops
4 Cya Art
6 Monkee Around
MONTANA JET is out of former champion filly Carabella. Qualified as a two year old in may last year and has been given plenty of time. Won a workout February 10 in a fair time but sprinted home in 28.1. Top pick.
WET FLIPFLOPS had a good trip on debut and stuck well for third. Still at the improving stage but is one of the leading chances.
CYA ART looked to have strengthened up between his September and February 12 runs. Comes out of a form maiden at Auckland so tough to beat here.
MONKEE AROUND has moved to the Rodney Frampton stable and has trialed well. Won in 2:44 last Saturday. They don’t go quicker in a workout than that. Strikes a good maiden field but will be ready first up.
Race 2
10 Demolition Man
6 Berrylicious Babe
8 Alana
9 Keystone Cavalier
DEMOLITION MAN looks thrown in here striking seven maiden runners against him tonight. Didn’t trot well last week when back in the field from his second row draw. He gets that again tonight albeit in a mobile. Should win.
BERRYLICIOUS BABE looked the goods when starting her career but she got steadily worse in recent starts. A month away from the races and no trials should have her fresh and ready in this field.
ALANA has had some tough assignments lately only being a one win mare against the old looser assessed trotters. Last week was her career best run when fourth behind As Free As Air and beating home horses like Molly Bones and Delson. Barrier eight hurts but going the right way.
KEYSTONE CAVALIER showed some zip late last Thursday after galloping away. The mobile should help him tonight but will have to avoid traffic early.
WYNBERG WATCH is the best maiden in this field by a margin. He is far from the finished product but he was just back too far last time and he did well to race into third. A good place bet.
Race 3
7 Oroua
5 Claudia Schiffer
10 Be My Rose
9 Four Kisses
OROUA surprisingly just battled on debut. That was at Auckland and he should be improved with the race day experience. Was scratched the week before so may have been a run short. Back left handed the key here.
CLAUDIA SCHIFFER has been eye catching in both starts. Has run the best sectionals in both of her starts. They have been good educational runs. Should go forward early but will she?
BE MY ROSE only qualified January 29. It is very rare for the Purdon /Phelan stable to wait until a horse turns four to qualify. Must have ability. Has since run well as a maiden at the workouts. Second behind Montana Storm February 10.
FOUR KISSES was beaten narrowly up the passing lane February 6. A mare learning every start, just needs to overcome the none draw.
DYNAMITE DEZ looks like Tarzan at the workouts but runs like Jane race day. Again looked the goods last Saturday when running second in 2:44. Will strip ready but he’s a take on trust commodity.
For odds TROOPER COOPER has been trialing really well since joining Rod MacKenzie. Has been well driven by Leah Hibell to get her juniors license and he can shock a few here.
Race 4
8 Monkey Selfie
2 The Last Gamble
11 Crazy
5 Fira
MONKEY SELFIE is a class above these. Set up the 3:26 pace in the Waikato Breeders stakes and got run over but should smash these. Even with her manners concerns.
THE LAST GAMBLE is a mobile specialist with plenty of gate speed so expect her to lead early and trail. The main danger to the favorite. Seven starts in mobiles for three wins and three placings.
CRAZY is fast. He suits the mobile as he struggles to get going in a trot from a stand. Won by ten lengths when last here on race day January 8. A big hope again after he looked faultless last Saturday at the workouts.
FIRA has been around and is racing more consistently lately. No Son Of Patrick to scare her today.
ISAAC H is impossible to predict. Trots he runs in the money. Gallops he runs last. Has won a mobile here previously.
Race 5
9 The Banker
2 Jack Tar
10 Young Conqueror
4 Brookies Jaffa
THE BANKER will need luck to get off the pegs but will get a hot enough pace in this for him to get over top of them. Latest second was in a hot Cambridge Futurity February 6. Racing in great form.
JACK TAR is the likely leader and seems to be thriving driven tough. Last start fourth was in the Cambridge cup.
YOUNG CONQUEROR last ground at the start in Cambridge cup but ended up in a good spot and whacked on for fifth. Always a first four chance.
BROOKIES JAFFA galloped away in his last two starts and it cost him dearly. Ran his last mile in 1:56 in Cambridge cup after losing 40m at the start. Back to mobile conditions today and he is sure to run the outsider but can win.
DIXIE REIGN has won four from five at Cambridge. Steps into the fire tonight. Her toughest test to date and being the highest rated horse gets the outside draw. A first four hope but hard to see her winning.
IDEAL AGENT utilized his terrific stand start manners when winning the Cambridge cup. This won’t be easy coming off the outside draw. Respect in this field.
Although BUGALUGS may be buried away on the pegs he showed that five back on the markers won’t stop him finding the line when placing third in the Cup February 6. A must for first fours.
Race 6
7 Waitforever
9 High Point
2 Sarandon
6 Bankers Gold
WAITFOREVER drops back from some top Auckland company. Has her first start at Cambridge tonight and though she is the lowest rated horse in this field she is going the furtherest. Expect her driven forward.
HIGH POINT grows a leg on the marker pegs. Drops back from the Cambridge cup series for this tonight. May get buried on pegs otherwise she would be top pick. Second in a cup qualifier two starts ago.
SARANDON has finished second at her last two starts. Last time was in a juniors race last Friday behind Fortunia. Distance won’t be an issue as three starts ago she was unlucky in a cup qualifier, narrowly behind High Point.
BANKERS GOLD just needed racing room earlier in the juniors race at Auckland last Friday. Surprisingly hasn’t won here in ten starts but never far away when in form.
KOWHAI PARK is a horse with potential. Had to sit parked in the 1:54 mile last Friday first up at Alexandra park. Up in grade here as only a one win horse but can win.
Race 7
5 Eighteen Carat
8 Itsthefinalcountdown
4 Panspacificjet
6 Carse O Fern Tom
EIGHTEEN CARAT was outstanding last week. Parked the duration outside the eventual winner Hezashadowplaya and was game enough to only finish a half length away. Home in 56 and 27.1. One start one win over the 2700m. Tough to roll.
ITSTHEFINALCOUNTDOWN has turned the corner lately. A strong second January 28, then never got into the contest at all February 6, but ran the best sectionals.
PANSPACIFICJET has a 2700m query here. Probably going further than most in this but still on the weak side. Ran home in 56 when coming from an impossible spot at Tauherenikau. Suffered from a virus when third at Otaki. a win chance.
CARSE O FERN TOM has gone around the rank outsider at his last three runs and has run out of his skin each time. Unlucky three back to not finish closer. Then two fourths in higher rated races than this.
WAVETHEBILL went down to the sires stakes final at Addington last November and overall has been disappointing. Won’t get an easier assignment and draw to use than tonight.
WITH REVENGE has had three starts for Kyle Marshall for three placings. Draw makes the job tougher tonight.
Best Bet: Race 7 (5) Eighteen Carat
Each Way Value: Race 5 (4) Brookies Jaffa
