Ipswich Best Bet – Celtic Princess
In the last race of the afternoon, Lawrie Mayfield-Smith’s Celtic Princess will be looking to make it back-to-back successes at Ipswich after she broke her maiden over 1100m first-up in good style. The three-year-old filly by Kaphero ran fifth on debut behind Lime Soda and subsequent Listed winner Uncommon James at the Gold Coast back in May, before running second in a hot form race at Doomben in July. Celtic Princess was a $41 outsider in her second start and only narrowly beaten by Rayjen while outrunning the likes of Mystic Aroma, who has since won back-to-back races in impressive style at the Sunshine Coast. Taylor Marshall won on this lady first-up from barrier two, and while he retains the ride, he will have to produce a good steer from barrier 12, although the 1350m start at Ipswich gives horses the entirety of the back straight to find a slot. With any luck, Celtic Princess can win again.
Next Best at Ipswich – The Lioness
The Toby & Trent Edmonds stable combine with Robbie Fradd and the ever-consistent The Lioness in race four, a Benchmark 68 over 1200m. This four-year-old daughter of Exosphere has had six starts for three wins and three seconds and comes into this off a strong first-up win on her home track at the Gold Coast over 1100m. The Lioness has only had one start at Ipswich and was beaten over three lengths by Red Bloom in what was her biggest defeat to date, which came in the same race that Fradd partnered her for the first and only time. The hoop will get his chance to make amends for that runner-up performance, and while the 57kg is a sharp 4kg rise from her first-up win, this smart mare should be able to handle it. From barrier nine, Fradd can take her straight to the front and make every post a winner. The Lioness is a quality horse who deserves another chance at metropolitan level.
