HRNZ’s updated Starting regulations

Harness Racing New Zealand’s updated Starting Regulations are now out for consultation.

The regulations have been drafted to improve all aspects pertaining to the start of races, whether it’s from a stand or from behind the mobile gate.

“One of the key components of any race meeting is ensuring that our races start on time and all horses get a fair and equal opportunity at the start,” says HRNZ’s General manager – Racing Catherine McDonald.

The impact of not doing things right can be widespread.

“It has a number of flow-on effects. For one it compromises the integrity of our sport.”

“And if our races are delayed then it adversely impacts wagering, specially in Australia where it could result in a full race meeting not being broadcast, therefore diminishing our export market considerably.”

It is HRNZ’s intention to implement the new regulations in early 2022.
