The Hobartville Stakes is a Group 2 race for three-year-olds, run over 1400m under set weight conditions.
Named after one of NSW’s historic thoroughbred stud farms, it has long been a key lead-up to Sydney’s autumn classics.
Originally held in early spring, the Hobartville Stakes shifted to autumn in 1978, aligning with the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m), Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m).
Traditionally run at Warwick Farm, the Hobartville Stakes now alternates between Rosehill Gardens and Royal Randwick.
The 2024 Hobartville Stakes, worth $400,000, was won by Celestial Legend, defeating Encap and Les Vampires, giving trainer Les Bridge his second Hobartville win—40 years after Sir Dapper’s victory in 1984.
Several Hobartville Stakes winners have gone on to Group 1 success, including Pierro, Dissident, Hallowed Crown, Kementari, and The Autumn Sun.
Notably, Aegon triumphed as an unbeaten Kiwi in 2021, while Dissident, Hallowed Crown, and The Autumn Sun claimed the Randwick Guineas double.
Other notable winners include Anamoe, Lonhro, Sir Dapper, and Celestial Legend.

How to bet on the Hobartville Stakes
Australian horse racing bookmakers will have betting on the Hobartville Staks available. Many of them will open an early market so you can wager on the race a week or so in advance.

Celestial Legend ($8.50) launched over the top late to score an eye-catching victory in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill. The son of Dundeel had always been promising a performance like he put forward in the 2024 Hobartville, but with only a maiden success to his name, the Les Bridge-trained galloper was beginning to test the patience of followers. He finally repaid that faith, with Kerrin McEvoy storming down the centre of the course in the concluding stages to claim victory and have the three-year-old on track for a Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) tilt later in the season.

Osipenko and Zou Tiger fought out the finish in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes with the Chris Waller-trained colt getting his nose down on the line to score. With a lot of speed injected in the race, due to the race favourite Aft Cabin and Communist racing each other to hold the lead, it set the race up for a swooper to finish strong and that’s exactly what Osipenko did under the urgings of Nash Rawiller. Osipenko jumped as a $7.50 third favourite with online betting sites and when you consider his run in the Caulfield Guineas last preparation, finishing half a length behind Golden Mile, he was always going to be hard to beat in the Hobartville.

The 2022 Hobartville Stakes, held at Rosehill Gardens, was claimed by Anamoe, showcasing his class with a strong performance. Trained by James Cummings and ridden by James McDonald, Anamoe settled midfield before unleashing a powerful finish to defeat Hilal and Converge. The Godolphin colt’s victory reaffirmed his status as one of Australia’s top three-year-olds, setting him up perfectly for the Randwick Guineas and further Group 1 targets in the autumn carnival.
