After recently celebrating 150 years of racing under the banner of Tasmanian Racing Club, the Elwick Racecourse has been the central hub of Tasmanian racing since its inception in 1874.
With over 100 meetings per and 200 trial days confirmed across the calendar year, the Tasmanian Racing Club attracts owners, trainers, and stakeholders from across the state, even drawing interest from Victoria – particularly during the Group 3 Hobart Cup (2400m) carnival in February.
There is a thriving racing scene across Tasmania, with Hobart Racecourse in the south-east, while Launceston Racecourse (Approximately 198km north) and Devonport Racecourse (251km north) reside closer to the northern side of the state.
Trainers John Blacker, John Keys, and Scott Brunton are just some of the major stables that boast terrific records at Hobart Racecourse and continue to hold a large portion of the equine talent in Tasmania.
The Tasmanian Racing Club also offers an outstanding destination for functions throughout the year, with both indoor and outdoor settings available for whatever best suits your needs.
Hobart is considered to be the no.1 racing venue in Tasmania.

Hobart racecourse dimensions and starting points
The Elwick Racecourse is run in an anti-clockwise direction, with a circumference of 1990m and a home straight of 350m, making it a fair thoroughbred track for any given meeting.
There are no chute starting positions at Hobart Racecourse, with all starting points disengaging from the course proper. They usually race between 800m to 2400m, with the 2200m and 2400m starting markers located towards the top of the straight, while the 1000m and 1200m sprinting positions are directly to the north of the winning post.
Major races held at Hobart racecourse
The Group 3 Hobart Cup draws attention from across Tasmania and around Australia, with the latest 150th running taken out by the Symon Wilde-trained Aurora Symphony with Jordan Childs in the saddle. The honour role includes the likes of Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott (Military Mission 2023), Mitchell Freedman (Ho Ho Khan 2022) and David Hayes (2010), establishing the $300,000 feature as a sort after prize.
The Listed Tasmanian Guineas (1600m) and Listed Tasmanian Derby are both reserved for three-year-olds, with the Tasmanian Derby proving to be a terrific form reference for the Group 1 South Australia Derby (2500m) at Morphettville later in the season. Dunkel was the latest galloper to do the double, with the Patrick Payne-trained galloper winning both in the 2023 season.
