Hawkesbury is set to play host to 10 races this weekend for its standalone Saturday race meeting. With three Group 3 events, a Listed race and the Clarendon Stakes for two-year-olds, it is set to be a bumper program. The track is rated a Soft 7 and the rail is in the true position for the entire course, while the first race is scheduled to jump at 11:20am AEST.
Hawkesbury Gold Rush Best Bet – Eleven Eleven
Eleven Eleven is one tough conveyance who just does not lie down. Although only a five-year-old, it feels as though this Gregory Hickman-trained gelding has been around for years as he lines up in his 28th race start on Saturday. The son of Fastnet Rock has been a real money spinner for his owners and loyal punters, winning nine races and earning just shy of $3 million in prizemoney, thanks to wins on the Gold Coast Magic Millions Race Day in three-straight years. He will have to carry 61kg on Saturday and has to chase Malkovich, who has 3.5kg less than him, but class will take this consistent gelding a very long way in his first-up run. Hugh Bowman will give this bloke every chance from barrier five.

Hawkesbury Guineas Best Bet – Mr Mozart
We have liked Mr Mozart for quite a while now, and although we haven’t been on him at his last two wins, we don’t think it is too late to hop back aboard. The three-year-old colt is racing in a rich vein of form, coming off wins in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes and Group 3 Doncaster Prelude when beating subsequent winners Fangirl and Our Playboy. The colt by Snitzel has been ridden by William Pike twice for two wins, so they will be looking to build their partnership on Saturday and take it to three from three. Trained by Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes, instructions are likely to be to go forward once again and give his rivals something to catch. He is two from two on wet tracks, so the Soft 7 won’t be an issue for him, while barrier five ensures he gets the right run in transit.

Hawkesbury Crown Best Bet – Cliff’s Art
We are going back to the well a bit here. Cliff’s Art caught our eye a little over 12 months ago when she hit the line strongly in her Australian debut. Her next two runs were nothing flash, so we are tipping something might have gone amiss with her, hence the extended stretch on the sidelines. The Matthew Smith-trained six-year-old was really good first-up behind Our Playboy a fortnight ago, hitting the line well to run fourth at Randwick in a Benchmark 100 over 1400m. She comes back slightly in trip to 1300m but has drawn much nicer in gate five to be able to settle a tad closer under Tim Clark, allowing her to make one sustained run around the bend and into the straight. This is a promising each-way play.

Hawkesbury Gold Cup Best Bet – Olmedo
Olmedo is a horse we don’t ever recall backing or even rating that well, but in a race like this, the Annabel Neasham-trained seven-year-old could give it a shake. Last Saturday was 12 months since he won his first race in Australia, leading all of the way in the Listed Tails Stakes at Doomben over the mile. The son of Declaration Of War was subsequently beaten five lengths in the Group 3 BRC Sprint and then beat just one horse home in the Stradbroke Handicap before going for a spell over the spring and summer months. Having run sixth when first-up in the Star Kingdom Stakes, the entire then went around in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes on April 16 and was beaten just shy of 10 lengths. That form does not exactly jump off the page, but going from a Group 1 weight-for-age race back to a Group 3 handicap and out to the mile while staying at 59kg bodes quite well for this horse. If he can find the front and dictate terms under Brodie Loy, he may well figure at great odds.

Best Bet at Hawkesbury – Deepstrike
Deepstrike has always been a horse we thought could win a nice race, and on the back of two brilliant wins in Victoria, he looks to have started to iron a few things out and put it all together. The four-year-old son of Tavistock won by 3.25 lengths at Sandown over 1800m on March 23 in a Benchmark 64, before going straight to a Benchmark 84 at Caulfield over 2000m and once again winning nicely, albeit only by half a length. Although most this gelding’s best runs have been on dry tracks, trainers Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr have opted to run him in NSW on an improving Soft 7, which could be the only concern. He comes back to 1800m and rises 5.5kg, but he gains the services of Hugh Bowman. He can go on with it now.

Best Value at Hawkesbury – Master Showman
If this boy is as good as his full brother Trapeze Artist, he may blow this lot away. The Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou-trained two-year-old broke his maiden at this track on April 13, leading all of the way over 1100m to win by a tenth of a length. The son of Snitzel now rises sharply to 1400m, which should suit, and he has drawn nicely in barrier six for Brenton Avdulla to take up the lead once again. Speaking to Alexiou throughout the week, he gave a strong push for this colt, which only added to our confidence levels. At around $9 with online bookmakers, Master Showman looks a fantastic each-way bet to start proceedings.
