What Happy Valley Races
Where Happy Valley Racecourse – Wong Nai Chung Rd, Happy Valley, Hong Kong
When Thursday, July 6, 2023
First Race 6:45pm HKT (8:45pm AEST)

Hong Kong racing returns to Happy Valley for the track’s penultimate meeting of the 2022/23 season, and there’s a cracking nine-race card on offer for punters. The rail sits in the A position throughout the entire circuit, and we should be getting a reprieve from the downpour of rain that hit the track over the weekend, providing us with a pristine Good surface for the evening. The first race is set to get underway at 6:45pm HKT (8:45pm AEST).

Best Bet: Reward Smile

Since winning on his Hong Kong debut at Sha Tin on April 30, the John Size-trained Reward Smile is yet to miss the frame. He’s been unlucky not to chalk up another win, running into second at his last three starts – the latest behind Wonder Kit, who got the desired setup on June 28 at Happy Valley. Reward Smile draws barrier two this time, and with a much more positive steer from jockey Zac Purton, we’re keen to be siding with this progressive son of Havana Grey to finish the night of racing.

Next Best: Joyful Hunter

You won’t see a more impressive debut at the city circuit than what Joyful Hunter produced on June 14. He got well back from a wide draw to be near last turning for home but motored to the line, giving his rivals a galloping lesson en route to a dominant two-length victory at double-figure odds. He does get a significant 3.5kg penalty for the win, but provided this three-year-old takes a step forward rather than regressing, you must think he can go on to win again with even running.

Next Best Again: Whizz Kid

Whizz Kid heads into Thursday off a rating of 94 and looks beautifully placed to recapture his best form from earlier in the preparation. He carried 56kg to victory off a weaker rating on November 9 at this course and distance, scoring a three-length win when leading all the way. The handicapper didn’t miss, hitting Whizz Kid with 11 rating points for the success, and the four-year-old gelding has struggled to find a win since. Still, we love the placement from trainer Tony Cruz, gaining a noteworthy swing in the weights to the likely favourite, Stoltz, from his last-start performance.
