Symon Wilde’s Gundec has fired late to take out the $200,000 Mitchelton Wines Bendigo Guineas (1400m).
The $5 starter with horse betting sites, and Joe Bowditch aboard, left behind favourties Asymmetrical ($2.15 for Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, jockey Jordan Childs) and Sharp Response ($1.90 for Julius Sandhu, jockey Beau Mertens) with 100m to go.
Enjoying a fine season, it was the Warrnambool-based Wilde’s 54th win this campaign, putting him ninth in the standings.
Earlier, The Cunning Fox displayed his superior staying quality to take out the $200,000 The Big Screen Company Bendigo St Leger Trial (2200m).
A plucky Station One ($31 to win for trainer Liam Howley with Carleen Hefel aboard) was in front at the turn with 300m to go before running out of puff.
It was Patrick Payne’s three-year-old gelding and $3.90 favourite with online bookmakers (jockey Billy Egan) who powered home in 2min20.76sec, leaving Ashy Boy (Patrick Kearney, Jarrod Fry) half a length behind at the finishing post.
