With the 2023 breeding season just around the corner, the National Online Breeding Stock Sale on Gavelhouse Plus gives buyers a prized opportunity to add Group One bloodlines to their broodmare band.
The 54-lot catalogue features numerous siblings, daughters and close relations of elite racetrack performers.
A major contributor to this high-quality catalogue is Windsor Park Stud, who are offering five beautifully bred broodmares.
- Lot 4, Artiste (NZ) (Mastercraftsman): a full-sister to the dual Group Two winner Mime (NZ) (Mastercraftsman), who was also a two-time placegetter at Group One level. Artiste herself was a Group Three placegetter.
- Lot 28, Lisboa (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy): a half-sister to the Group One Queensland Oaks (2400m) heroine Quintessential (NZ) (Fast ‘n’ Famous).
- Lot 37, Pantea (NZ) (Ocean Park): a half-sister to the undefeated Group Two Silver Slipper (1100m) winner Amelia’s Dream (Redoute’s Choice), and from the family of a dozen other stakes performers including the multiple Group One placegetter Young Werther (NZ) (Tavistock).
- Lot 46, Sesto (NZ) (Jakkalberry): a half-sister to the three-time Group One winner Gingernuts (NZ) (Iffraaj).
- Lot 51, Tighten Me Up (NZ) (Turn Me Loose): a daughter of Group One performer Lady Kipling (NZ) (Savabeel), and half-sister to Group Two winner Fascino (NZ) (Charm Spirit) and the stakes-placed Favreau (NZ) (Tavistock).
“It’s a good time for buyers to be adding to their broodmare band ahead of the new season, and we’re putting five very well-credentialled young mares up on the market for this particular sale,” Windsor Park stud general manager Steve Till said. “They’re all genuine sales on behalf of clients who are reducing their numbers, most of them are in foal to well-performed or promising young stallions, and we’re looking forward to seeing how they go.
“Artiste is a sister to the very good mare Mime. Mastercraftsman proved himself to be a top-class sire everywhere he went around the world, and he’s now really impressing as a broodmare sire as well.
“Artiste herself was a very good mare that was expertly handled by Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman. She won seven races and placed at Group Three level.
“She missed on a single late cover last spring, so she’ll be all ready to go for the upcoming breeding season.
“Lisboa is a half-sister to an Oaks winner and has a good family behind her. She has a really nice foal by our exciting young shuttle stallion Circus Maximus, and she’s in foal to Armory, who ran second in a Cox Plate and is similarly bred to Circus Maximus (both by Galileo out of Danehill Dancer mares).
“We’re offering Pantea in foal to Turn Me Loose. She comes from a really brilliant Australian family. Her half-sister Amelia’s Dream was a very high-class stakes winner as a two-year-old, and their dam was a brilliant two-year-old as well.
“Sesto is a half-sister to Gingernuts and is by Jakkalberry, who has thrown top-level performers in Australia.
“The last of our mares is Tighten Me Up, a half-sister to Fascino and a daughter of the very good mare Lady Kipling. She’s a good-sized mare with a quality commercial family behind her.
“Tighten Me Up is in foal to Circus Maximus, whose first crop of New Zealand foals have made a very big impression around the traps. They’re correctly made and have very good attitudes. He was a high-class racehorse himself, winning two Group One miles at Royal Ascot (the St James’s Palace Stakes and the Queen Anne Stakes). He comes from the family that gave us the great Noble Bijou.”
But the high-quality pedigree credentials in the catalogue are by no means limited to the Windsor Park Stud consignment.
Lot 5 is Ashlaa (Shalaa), who was a $300,000 yearling that had her own racing career cut short by injury. She is a half-sister to the Group One JJ Atkins (1600m) winner Capital Gain (Ad Valorem).
Camarosa (NZ) (Iffraaj), who is catalogued as Lot 7, is a two-time winner and is out of a half-sister to the Golden Slipper (1200m) winner, champion two-year-old and successful sire Canny Lad. This high-class family has also produced sires such as Sepoy and Ghibellines, along with the recent elite Australian sprinter Bivouac (Exceed And Excel).
Lot 14 is the unraced Distinction (Pierro), out of a half-sister to Group One winner Gee I Jane (NZ) (Jahafil). Another half-sister, the stakes-winning Miss Jessie Jay (NZ) (Spectacularphantom), is dam of Group One winners Katie Lee (Pins) and Banchee (NZ) (Oratorio).
Lot 19 is the British-bred mare India (Poet’s Voice), who won three races and is a half-sister to the globe-trotting stayer Big Orange (Duke Of Marmalade). Best known for winning Royal Ascot’s Group One Gold Cup (4000m), he also placed in showpiece staying events in Dubai and Australia. Another elite stayer, the multiple Melbourne Cup (3200m) runner-up Red Cadeaux (Cadeaux Genereaux), comes from the same family.
Justagem (NZ) (Stravinsky), who is catalogued as Lot 21, is a three-race winner in her own right and a half-sister to Group One winner Penny Gem (NZ) (Pentire) and Listed winner Fairygem (NZ) (Viscount).
Lot 23 is the dual Listed winner Kekova (NZ) (Elusive City), who is already the dam of four winners from five foals to race, and she is also a half-sister to the dam of this season’s Group One Australian Guineas (1600m) and New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1000m) heroine Legarto (NZ) (Proisir).
Neon Moon (NZ) (Exosphere) is Lot 34. She won four races and is a half-sister to (She’s) Licketysplit (NZ) (Turn Me Loose), who won last season’s Group One Sistema Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie. She’s Lickysplit performed at the elite level in Melbourne in the spring, winning the Group Two Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) and finishing third in the Group One Thousand Guineas (1600m).
Lots 38, 43 and 48 are all being offered by Soliloquy Lodge and represent their famed bloodlines, tracing back to the great Soliloquy (NZ) (Sobig).
Lot 40 is Prima Donna (NZ) (Super Easy), a winning half-sister to Prowess (NZ) (Proisir). Trained by Roger James and Robert Wellwood, Prowess has won seven of her nine starts including this season’s Group One Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m), Group One New Zealand Stakes (2000m) and Karaka Million 3YO Classic (1600m).
Lot 52 is Tsukioka (Flying Spur), who is the dam of seven-time Hong Kong winner Regency Bo Bo (NZ) (Denman). Tsukioka’s other claim to fame is that she is a half-sister to three stakes winners, headed by Group One Hong Kong Mile (1600m) winner Glorious Days (Hussonet). Another of Tsukioka’s siblings is the Listed-winning Spurcent (Flying Spur), who is granddam of the current Australian Group performer Revolutionary Miss (Russian Revolution).
Daughters of Group One stars
The catalogue also features a number of fillies and mares whose dams shone brightly on the racetrack.
Lot 1 is a two-year-old filly by So You Think (NZ) out of Quintessential (NZ) (Fast ‘n’ Famous), who won six races including the Group One Queensland Oaks (2400m), the Group Two Eagle Farm Cup (2200m) and the Group Three Chairman’s Handicap (2100m) and Desert Gold Stakes (1600m). She also placed in the Group One Queensland Derby (2400m) and New Zealand Oaks (2400m).
Lot 41 is Pushtheboundaries (NZ) (Pentire), whose dam Honor Bound (NZ) (Honor Grades) was a six-time winner including the Group One Easter Handicap (1600m) and Group Two Rich Hill Mile (1600m). Honor Bound is also the granddam of two stakes winners – dual Singapore black-type winner Alibi (NZ) (Darci Brahma) and the Queensland Listed winner Honorable Spirit (NZ) (Charm Spirit).
The Lion Queen (NZ) (High Chaparral) is catalogued as Lot 49. Herself a winner, she is a daughter of the Group One Avondale Gold Cup (2200m) winner The Mighty Lions (NZ) (Grosvenor).
Along with her own racetrack feats, The Mighty Lions is also the dam of nine winners from 10 foals to race, headed by the The Lion Queen’s full-sister Vaquera (NZ) (High Chaparral), who won at Group Three level and placed in the Group One Queensland Oaks (2400m). Another daughter of The Mighty Lions is the four-race winner Minnaleo (NZ) (Black Minnaloushe), who is the dam of the Group One Randwick Guineas (1600m) winner Lion’s Roar (NZ) (Contributer).
Bidding in the National Online Breeding Stock Sale is set to open on Friday 7th July and will close from 7pm (NZT) on Wednesday 12th July.
Also online is a 44 Lot mixed bloodstock auction that will close from 7pm (NZT) on Monday 10 July.
