Grebeni eyeing Winx Guineas success en route to The Gong

Grebeni racing news
Grebeni is riding a hot streak into Saturday’s Winx Guineas at the Sunshine Coast.

In-form galloper Grebeni will look to make it four on the trot and remain undefeated this prep when he lines up in the Group 3 Winx Guineas at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

With a win at Warwick Farm in a Benchmark 68 followed by two wins in Benchmark 72 grade at Rosehill Gardens, the three-year-old is currently the $4.40 favourite for the $174,000-to-the-winner contest over 1600m this weekend.

Winner: Grebeni

Grebeni will come out of barrier 18 in the Caloundra Cup Day feature, with Ryan Maloney booked to ride.

Success in his first Group race will be sure to instil even greater confidence in connections as co-trainer Gerald Ryan makes plans for him in the upcoming spring carnival.

He has been set for the Guineas with the next step being either the $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m) or The Gong (1600m) worth $1 million.

“I wouldn’t rule it (Golden Eagle) out because he can reel off such good sectionals,” co-trainer Ryan said.

“But the race I’d like to set him for in the spring is The Gong.”

With the best online bookmakers, Grebeni is currently paying $34 for the Golden Eagle at Rosehill in October.

The son of Ocean Park has lined up nine times for four wins and three placings, with $218,975 in prizemoney banked.

The markets for the Winx Guineas have Soothsayer on the second line of betting at $4.80, with Robusto at $6 and Chairman at $7 as the lone runners at single figures in the market.
