Tragedy struck at Warrnambool on Monday as Grand Promenade, a two-time Melbourne Cup contender, was euthanised following a harrowing fall during the opening race.
The eight-year-old gelding, poised for victory, stumbled at the second-last hurdle, resulting in a catastrophic tumble.
With a racing career boasting eight wins and eight placings out of 32 starts, Grand Promenade, adorned in the colours of owner Gerry Ryan, amassed over $1.2 million in prize money.
Among his notable achievements was clinching the 2021 Group 3 Bart Cummings (2520m) and finishing sixth in the Melbourne Cup, under the training of Ciaron Maher and his former partner David Eustace.
In a somber statement, Racing Victoria (RV) expressed, “It is with sadness that Racing Victoria (RV) confirms that Grand Promenade was humanely euthanized by the on-course veterinarian as a result of an injury sustained during the running of the Maiden Hurdle at Warrnambool today.”
RV extended condolences to the owners, trainer Shane Jackson, and stable staff, acknowledging their sorrowful loss.
