Best Bet at Goulburn – Maple Gold
The way the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Maple Gold won on debut at Muswellbrook on January 4 suggested he was one to follow and we think he can remain undefeated come Monday. The three-year-old son of Vancouver was trapped three wide with no cover for the first 800m of a 1500m event, but when asked for an effort in the home straight kept finding and won by close to two-lengths. From barrier five under Winona Costin, we expect Maple Gold will gain an uncontested lead and with the step up the mile second-up from a spell, he looks a clear best bet of the day on Monday. We are more than happy to take the $2.90 on offer from Neds.
Next Best at Goulburn – Hardy
Since claiming his maiden win at Wagga in April 2021, the Luke Pepper-trained Hardy has run four consecutive minor placings, but Monday looks his day to break the winless drought. The four-year-old son of I Am invincible returned from a three-month spell with a third-place finish at Sapphire Coast on December 27 and looks well-placed with the step up to 1300m. His sole career win came at the 1300m and despite the tricky barrier (9), we expect to see Jay Ford to have him settled up on speed, preferably outside the leader. If he can afford not getting trapped wide, then Hardy should prove too hard to run down.
Best Value at Goulburn – Golden Chances
In the opening leg of the quaddie, we will be hoping the Matthew Smith-trained Golden Chances can finally break his maiden at start 16. The four-year-old mare out of Krupt comes to this 1400m affair on the back of consecutive runner-up performances and has enough ability to take out a maiden like this. Her biggest issue is where she gets in the running, as she likes to settle towards the rear of the field and unleash a nice turn of foot. With Vintage set to provide a genuine tempo, the race looks perfectly set up for Golden Chances to finish over the top of her rivals and bring up a deserved win.
