Gosford racing preview

What Gosford Races
Where The Entertainment Grounds – 4 Racecourse Rd, West Gosford NSW 2250
When Wednesday, January 25, 2023
First Race 1:55pm AEDT

Racing heads to The Entertainment Grounds in Gosford on Wednesday afternoon for a competitive seven-race program. We currently sit on Soft 7 conditions, but with some drying days ahead, it’s likely we’ll be closer to a Soft 5 or possibly even a Good track. The rail sits in the true position the entire circuit, so we’ll be looking for key runners to be pressing forward. The first race is scheduled to get underway at 1:55pm AEDT.

Best Bet: Vindication

Our best bet comes in the first leg of the quaddie at Gosford on Wednesday afternoon, in the form of Jarrod Austin-trained gelding Vindication. He’s been very consistent this preparation with two minor placings in his four starts this time in and all of his efforts have had merit. His run last start behind Garrison at BM72 level was impressive when sitting mid-field throughout to run into fourth 3.4 lengths off the winner. The margin may seem significant; however, it was a race where every runner struggled to make ground off a slow tempo mid-race and his pattern usually sees him a lot closer in running. He drops back into Class 1 company here and looks to the 1200m for the first time since his eye-catching first up performance at Newcastle on October 15. Brett Prebble takes the reins on this son of Deep Field, and with a lovely run on the leader’s back throughout, Vindication looks a cracking chance to jag his second career win.

Next Best Bet: Wild Irish Rover

Wild Irish Rover broke his maiden two starts back and looks primed to get his second win on the board on Wednesday. He looks to the 1600m for the first time and has given every indication the step up in trip is only a positive for this gelding out of No Nay Never. He was unfortunate to be beaten last time out by 0.1 lengths by Smooth Flight at Wyong on January 7, as he was swamped late when leading. We feel as though he’s much better ridden with cover, which should see him run out the mile strongly. Joshua Parr gets back aboard as a massive positive due to him ridding Wild Irish Rover to victory in his one and only career win. From barrier six the ideal scenario would be for Parr to go find the one-by-one in transit; however, provided he gets cover throughout the trip, he should be storming over the top of his rivals late.

Next Best Again: Announcing

The third race is an intriguing race for the maiden gallopers, and we think Announcing for the John O’Shea yard looks a progressive type worth backing first-up. She’s had plenty of barrier trials heading into this 1200m assignment and based on her latest trial, looks ready to be competitive on debut. This daughter of Press Statement won her latest trial by 1.3 lengths on a heavy surface at Gosford on January 5, hard ridden from well back to score. Usually we wouldn’t like such a pushed-out effort; however, it showed versatility from her previous trials on softer tracks and provides solid references for how she can travel on a wetter surface if we do end up racing on a chopped-up track. Brenton Avdulla hops on board this time and from barrier seven will be likely to get back on Announcing before letting her run on and prove the barrier trials were no fluke.
