Gosford Race Club has lined up a competitive eight-race program for Wednesday afternoon with plenty of progressive gallopers on display. The rail has moved out to +3m the entire circuit and we’ll be racing on a Good 4 surface come the first race scheduled to get underway at 1:25pm AEDT. Let’s get stuck into what looks a tricky card.
Best Bet: Mr Wallace
Mr Wallace looks a good play in the fourth race of the program when stepping up to the 1200m for the first time this preparation. This son of Medaglia D’Oro has been unfortunate not to be free of his maiden status after two strong performances — first at Gosford on October 27 when beaten 2.5 lengths to Lovero, then again behind California Press at Hawkesbury on November 17. He found trouble in transit on both occasions when lugging in badly to be moderate to the line. The key factor on Wednesday is the noticeable lack of tempo, and from barrier one with a fitness edge on his rivals, look for jockey Tim Clark to lead on this Godolphin gelding before kicking clear turning for home. We may have to take a shorter price, but he looks too good for this lot and hopefully he can chalk up his first career win.

Next Best: Fashion Legend
We look to be getting a great price in the second race on the card with Fashion Legend. This Richard & Will Freedman-trained gelding was by no means disgraced first-up at Hawkesbury on November 17 when defeated by a very smart three-year-old in Shadow Vampire, who went on to frank the form by winning again since. Fashion Legend was back in the field and hit the line very strongly in that performance, and he should relish getting up to the 1200m on Wednesday at Gosford. We get experienced hoop Kerrin McEvoy on board and he should be looking to slot in closer to the speed than last time out, hopefully finding the back of likely leader and race favourite My Eloise before finding his best late to score.

Best Value: Oakfield Paperbark
In a race full of unknown quantities, we’re keen to be with Oakfield Paperbark as our best each-way bet of the program. His run first-up behind Lucky Variety was enormous from last, turning for home to hit the frame in what looked about five strides. He trailed the eventual winner turning for home but was outclassed by what was a big maiden test at this track on November 8. He looks the wrong price in a race that has so many first starters and we’re happy be siding with a horse that has plenty of race experience now. Tom Sherry takes the reins for the Kristen Buchanan stable and should find a midfield spot with some cover. If he can reproduce that last-start performance, the $6.50 on offer with online bookies looks a cracking bet.
