The 2022 Golden Eagle at Rosehill Gardens will feature 20 of the best four-year-olds in the country right now, with two international horses taking their place in the $10 million race this year. The winner of the 1500m race will take home a massive $5 million prize, while every runner in the top three will collect over $1 million, making it one of the most lucrative races on the Australian racing calendar.
Online bookmakers have opened their market with Light Infantry as a clear $4 favourite. Only two other horses are under double figures in the market and they are two of the Peter Moody runners – Chain Of Lightning ($7) and I Wish I Win ($8). The market for the 2022 Golden Eagle is wide open, so there is plenty of value to be found across the 20-horse field.
The speed map in the Golden Eagle this year looks to be a relatively simple one, as the two Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott runners, In The Congo and Converge, will look to take up the lead, while Mr Mozart and Lightsaber will be crossing from wide barriers to also take up prominent positions. At the back of the field we will see I Wish I Win, Fangirl, Pinstriped and Chain Of Lightning, who will snag back from their barriers and let the pace go so they can finish off well and run home late.

I Wish I Win comes to Rosehill Gardens for his first look at the track in the $10 million Golden Eagle. Since coming over to Australia from New Zealand this gelding has been very impressive, winning at Caulfield over 1400m and at Sandown over 1300m. This son of Savabeel ran fifth in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap at Caulfield; he was left a little flat-footed as the field came around the home turn, which ultimately lost him the race by just under one and a half lengths. Luke Nolen will take the ride for the third start in a row. Jumping from barrier 14 should suit this guy, as he likes to get back in his races, and there looks to be lots of speed, which means he should have every chance to run over the top of them late.
One of the two international runners, Light Infantry, looks to be a very good chance going off of his form in Europe, after running second at his past two starts in the Group 1 Haras De Fresna and Group 1 PR Jean Prat in France. It is clear that this son of Fast Company is a talented horse, as he has been competing in Group 1 company since his third career start. Many believe that European form will be very competitive with Australian form this spring, so if that is the case, you cannot rule out the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace import this Saturday.
Chain Of Lightning, another Moody runner, comes to Sydney for her first run at Rosehill Gardens, where she will look to improve her record to seven wins from eight starts. Even though this mare is very talented and showed all of her class at her most previous win in the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes at Caulfield, her racing pattern could be what beats her on Saturday. She has drawn barrier two, but come raceday she could be jumping from barrier one if Kiss Sum doesn’t get into the field, which means she will have to get off the inside fence from the back of the field.
In The Congo was very good running second in the Group 3 Sydney Stakes, where he was just beaten by Rocketing By in the shadows of the post. This guy will be leading the field for a long way, but there is a query at 1500m for this son of Snitzel.
