Saturday metropolitan racing will return to Gold Coast Turf Club this weekend for a very competitive nine-race program. The track is currently rated as a Good 4, and with no rain on the forecast — combined with some warm weather on Friday and Saturday — we don’t expect to see the track get any softer than the current rating. The rail will be in the true position for the entire circuit. Racing gets underway at 12:03pm AEST.
Best Bet: Holyfield
In the Listed Recognition Stakes over 1350m we will be siding with the Annabel Neasham-trained Holyfield, who is coming off a big win first-up in the Listed Keith Noud Quality over 1200m first-up on November 12. Now that this five-year-old gelding is second-up his chance of winning are increased due to his record when second-up, recording two wins and a third from five starts. Second-up last preparation this son of I Am Invincible ran fourth by half a length in the Group 3 BRC Sprint over 1300m, finishing behind Soxagon, Alligator Blood and Niccanova. There will be none of those horses in the Recognition Stakes on Saturday and he will be up against Listed grade and not Group 3 grade, which will make him very hard to beat with even luck this weekend. Brodie Loy will stick with this gelding after riding him to victory last start, and from barrier seven Loy should be able to get across the field and sit in the one-one position to give this guy every chance to go two-from-two this campaign.

Next Best Bet: Akihiro
The third race of the day will feature the rematch between the current online bookmakers favourite, Drive A Deel, and our selection in this race, Akihiro, from when they met last start at Doomben over 1600m. The Gary Portelli-trained Akihiro was very unlucky when he was beaten by the favourite last start after he sat in the box seat for the majority of the 1600m event and didn’t see a lot of running room until the 150m mark, only to be beaten by a nose on the line. This son of Maurice has recorded his only two career wins when he has been third-up and that will be the case on Saturday, when he takes his place in the Benchmark 80 over 1600m. Tegan Harrison has retained the ride this weekend and jumping from barrier two should help keep this guy off the rail and allow him to find clear air around the turn. If all of this happens, this gelding will flip the script on the last meeting between the two favourites.

Best Value: Star Gamble
The Kelly Schweida-trained Star Gamble looks to be a good chance at odds to take out the fifth race of the day over 1200m at his third start this preparation. This four-year-old gelding has only been third-up once before in his short career, running second at that only start at Ipswich over 1100m. First-up this preparation this guy was very good, winning in Heavy conditions over 1200m at the Sunshine Coast, while at his most recent start he struggled to see out the 1350m at Doomben and finished fourth. From barrier six, James Orman should be able to push forward and sit one off the fence and two pairs back from the leaders. With even luck in running and a nice run in transit, this guy will run home strong and look the winner at some stage during the home straight.
