The Gawler & Barossa Jockey Club is the destination for racing in South Australia on Saturday afternoon with a strong nine-race program scheduled. With a perfect day for racing forecast, we expect to start on a Good 4, with an upgrade to a Good 3 early on in the piece, while the rail comes out 4m from the 800m-400m and then 2m the remainder, meaning every runner will get their chance if good enough. Action commences out of Gawler at 12:17pm ACDT.
Best Bet at Gawler: Rebel Lee
Winning form is good form, and it is hard to knock the way Rebel Lee has been accounting for her opponents in recent times. The Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained mare has strung together three consecutive wins, including two here at the Gawler 2100m. We anticipate she will continue that run of form when she steps out in BM72 grade on Saturday, and with Jason Holder sticking on board she will be given every chance in the world to bring up a picket fence. She relishes firmer going having won four of her six starts on Good-rated surfaces, and despite drawing barrier 10 we expect Holder to have her in a prominent position throughout. From there it should be an easy watch for favourite backers, and the $3 on offer with online betting sites looks to be a steal.

Next Best at Gawler: Picargo
Ryan Balfour and Alana Livesey will be looking to continue their strong form with Picargo who is on the hunt for a third straight win and a fourth from his last seven starts this campaign. The six-year-old gelding has a genuine love affair with Gawler having won three times and finished second on four other occasions from just eight starts at this track. Those results include three wins and three seconds at the 1200m here. He was a determined winner last time out over this track and trip in harder company than what he faces on Saturday, and with Livesey’s 3kg claim he gets in really well at the weights in BM76 grade considering he is a 79-rater. From barrier five we expect to see Picargo balance up in the one-one, where Livesey can get a nice tow into the race and let Picargo do his thing in the home straight.

Best Value at Gawler: Halifax Road
The Peter Hardacre-trained Halifax Road gets back on top of the ground for the first time since his debut victory at Murray Bridge back on October 27, 2021, and we’re willing to give him a push at a price with online bookmakers. The four-year-old gelding has won a Murray Bridge 1200m trial on a Good 4 in the lead up to this first-up run. He was hard-held throughout that trial up on speed and despite not being asked for an effort kicked clear in the home straight to score by almost two-lengths. If he brings the same type of demeanour as he showed on that day and can cross from barrier 11, he looks a great each-way play at the halfway point of the Gawler card.
