Fynn Frost will be vying to make it back-to-back wins on the West Coast when he contests the Rosco Contractors Reefton Cup (3200m) on Wednesday.
The Kyle Cameron-trained gelding held out the late challenge of Belmont Major to win by a nose over 2600m at Westport on Monday and his trainer is hoping for a repeat performance to close out the circuit.
“I am rapt with him,” said Cameron, who also did the steering. “He just sat on the fence and he has always been pretty strong and he was able to hang on, so I was really happy with him.”
Fynn Frost disappointed on Boxing Day when finishing tenth in the Westport Cup (3200m) after breaking early.
Cameron said he was happy with the gelding heading into the race, and he is hoping for improved manners on Wednesday.
“I was happy with him coming over, but I was a little bit disappointed with his run on the first day,” he said.
“He has been here before and backed-up, so I was confident he would back-up nicely, and he did.”
Fynn Frost will start behind the 10m mark on Wednesday and Cameron believes he will be more than competitive at Reefton.
“It will be a little bit harder off the 10m, but it is a similar field and he always goes an honest race. He is a pretty reliable horse,” Cameron said.
Cameron will have a number of other starters on Wednesday, but has highlighted the Kevin Musso-trained Melando Chief in the Reefton Contractors Pace (2000m) as his other leading hope of the day.
“Melando Chief had a couple of steering issues on the second day, we are just adding a rein pricker. If he steers a bit better he will be a chance in his race,” Cameron said.
Cameron has enjoyed his time on the West Coast over the last week and said he always looks forward to the West Coast hospitality.
“It is lovely over here,” he said. “The weather has been fantastic. It is always a good trip.
“You couldn’t ask for better hospitality from the locals.”
