Best Bet at Tamworth – Highlights
Highlights can start his preparation the way he finished his last, provided he handles having 62kg on his back. The Cody Morgan-trained four-year-old was a dominant winner at this track in January and backed that up with a comfortably win in a Highway at Randwick in February. The son of Your Song was given a well-deserved break after that, before coming back in and trialling twice in June. At his most recent trial, he was only narrowly beaten by The Bopper, who went really well at Eagle Farm last Saturday, so that form should hold up for a country Benchmark 74. He should get the favours under Aaron Bullock from gate three and take plenty of beating as the class horse of this field.

Next Best at Tamworth – Exolay
Kris Lees and Dylan Gibbons combine in the fifth race of the day with three-year-old filly Exolay. The daughter of Exosphere was a good winner first-up at Port Macquarie over 1500m on a Soft 6, before finding two better at Gunnedah on July 4 over the mile. Lees has opted to keep her at 1600m on Friday, which looks a wise move as she should be fit as a fiddle third-up after two runs over similar distances. Gibbons has outridden his country claim, so Exolay will have to carry 60.5kg on her back, but we are confident she will be able to hold her own in a field like this.

Best Value at Tamworth – Dresden
We are hopeful that barrier 19 will give us an each-way quote about three-year-old gelding Dresden, who is lining up in his second run of the preparation. The Tracey Bartley-trained son of Shamus Award went well in his first preparation earlier in the year, running a narrow second on debut at Wyong before going well in metropolitan company behind Stray, Taizai and Money From The Sky. He had probably had enough by his third start, and the Heavy 8 track wouldn’t have been ideal, so we’re happy to forgive him for that. His trial was good, and his first-up run was passable on a Soft 7 at Gunnedah, so back on a Good 4 and in a weak maiden over 1400m, Dresden can go close.
