We’re back racing under lights on Friday night with a cracking eight-race program out of Canterbury Park. The rail moves out +2m for the entire circuit, with a Good 4 surface expected for the meeting. We should see some more even racing with tempo-related outcomes rather than the traditional hot rail we see when it is in the true position at Canterbury. Let’s try and build a bankroll heading into the weekend.
Best Bet: Huon
We must wait until the lucky last for our best bet on Friday evening, but it should be worth the wait as Huon looks a keen bet in this BM72 contest. Trained by James Cummings and the Godolphin team, this four-year-old by Kermadec is yet to miss the frame in his career with six starts for two wins and four minor placings. He should have had his third win last start at Canterbury on November 11, when he went down by a length to Destination. With clear running turning for home, he would’ve won that night; however, with a luckless run and nowhere to go, we didn’t see his best. Drawn in gate four here with Zac Lloyd taking the reins with his 3kg claim, Huon should be figuring again with the step up to 1200m. From a stalking position just in behind the speed, look for him to power home late and score with a blistering turn of foot.

Next Best: Jewellery
The Zac Lloyd and Godolphin combination features again here with the lightly raced Jewellery. She is returning from her two-year-old preparation after a 303-day spell and looks in amazing order to break her maiden status in this 1100m affair for the three-year-old fillies. Her two starts were strong at Caulfield behind Philosopher on January 8 and then Miss Roseiano on January 26, and on both occasions she was back in the field before flying home to make up a stack of ground on her rivals. However, it’s her barrier trial on November 11 at Warwick Farm that really caught the eye; it was nothing short of spectacular, yet she was hard held going past the post and jockey Zac Lloyd didn’t move an inch. On that evidence, it’s safe to say Jewellery has returned in terrific shape, and if that holds true, she will take a power of beating despite this being one of the more competitive races on the Canterbury card.

Best Value: Arranmore
Arranmore is a four-year-old mare out of the Chris Waller yard and looks ready to chalk up her second career win on Friday night. This daughter by Astern is well overdue to score; she has been in the minor money five times without finding the winner’s enclosure, but we think that can change in this 1250m BM72 contest. She is first-up after a 146-day spell and looks to resume strongly after two soft trial performances. Her latest piece of work on November 14 at Randwick was more than enough to say she’s going well on return, and the booking of James McDonald after sitting on her in the trial only boost our confidence. Arranmore is drawn well enough to get a positive run and should have her chance in a race that looks to have a hot tempo. If she can produce her best, the $7 on offer with online bookmakers is well overs.
