Winter has well and truly arrived in Melbourne as we head to Flemington Racecourse on Saturday afternoon for a nine-race card kicking off at 11:50am AEST. With gloomy conditions setting in throughout the week, we are bound to be racing on a rain-affected track. The surface is currently rated a Heavy 8, while the rail comes out 9m for the entire circuit. Despite the conditions, we are racing at arguably the best track in the country and every horse should still get their chance if they are good enough.
Best Bet at Flemington – Americain Angel
The Danny O’Brien-trained Americain Angel is as honest a mare as you could hope for, and we are anticipating she will get her winter campaign off to a winning start. The four-year-old boasts a record of 13: 3-7-1, so there is no doubt she has proven to be a costly conveyance for backers. However, two of her three wins have come on rain-affected going, including a win over 1400m, the trip she resumes at on Saturday. She has not missed the top two in four starts on wet tracks (4: 2-2-0) and has three runner-up efforts to her name when resuming from a spell. Add in Jamie Kah sticking on board and it is hard to go past Americain Angel as the best bet of the day. The $6 on offer with online betting sites is simply too good to ignore.

Next Best at Flemington – Elzamee
Having beaten subsequent SA Fillies Classic winner The Amazonian last time out, the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Elzamee simply looks the one to beat in the 2000m event for Super VOBIS three-year-olds. The colt relished the drop back to the 2000m at Caulfield on May 7 having struggled to see out the 2400m in the Australian Derby. His run in the Derby was his first on a heavy track, and with that fitness and experience under his belt as he heads to Flemington, we are more than happy to side with him. Look for Jye McNeil to have the son of Deep Impact settled worse than midfield with cover due to the wide barrier (13). As long as the pair do not get trapped wide the trip, Elzamee is clearly the horse in the race with most promise. We are happy to take the $4.40 on offer with Bet365.

Best Value at Flemington – Jigsaw
Coming off a quick seven-day backup, the Cindy Alderson-trained Jigsaw looks well placed as he looks to bring up a third win in succession. Having smacked his rivals at Cranbourne on May 13, the three-year-old gelding backed it up with a tough win at Caulfield on May 28 when needing to knuckle down inside the final 100m to get the chocolates. His win at Caulfield saw him jump from barrier 15, the same barrier he jumps from on Saturday, so we expect Michael Walker to have the Manhattan Rain gelding in the first four upon settling. With race fitness on his side and all four his wins coming on rain-affected going, Jigsaw looks the one to gun down in the second leg of the quaddie.
